The Big Break: Mukesh Chhabra and Bosco Martis Kick Off Digital Talent Search for Actors, Singers, and Dancers
A new talent hunt is set to revolutionize the traditional audition process by taking it into the digital realm. Titled The Big Break, this competition combines acting, dancing, and singing, offering a platform for participants from all over India. Created by casting director Mukesh Chhabra and choreographer Bosco Martis, the initiative opened its call for entries on August 5. The format has been developed with the help of format creator Rajiv Lakshman and is produced by BARD.
A Digital Approach to Talent Discovery
Unlike conventional talent hunts that typically focus on a single discipline and rely on television auditions, The Big Break embraces platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. Participants can audition using their smartphones by sending a collaboration request to the official @thebigbreakindia handle, along with their performance. Depending on the discipline, this could be a monologue, a song, or a dance routine.
The competition aims to accept and publish 40 to 60 entries daily on the show’s social media channels. Selected participants will progress through various stages of the competition, culminating in an on-ground finale.
Mukesh Chhabra’s Vision for New Talent
For Mukesh Chhabra, the driving force behind this initiative is to bridge the gap between emerging performers and the entertainment industry. He stated, “Talent has never been limited to one city or one background, and after years of meeting artists from across the world, I felt it was time to make the journey between talent and the industry a little shorter. That’s what inspired Bosco and me to create The Big Break.”
Chhabra emphasized the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in the competition. “Together with our teams, we wanted to build a platform that is accessible, inclusive, and designed for today’s digital generation, where actors, singers, and dancers can be discovered on merit alone.” He will mentor the acting segment, drawing from his extensive experience as a prominent casting director in the industry.
Bosco Martis on Empowering Aspiring Performers
Choreographer Bosco Martis, who will mentor the dance segment, shared how his own journey as a performer shaped the concept of The Big Break. “When I started my journey, I experienced the struggles and challenges that come with chasing a dream. Those experiences shaped who I am today,” he said.
Martis highlighted the wealth of untapped talent across India. “India is home to countless talented singers, actors, dancers, and performers who simply haven’t been given the platform they deserve. Some of our best dancers are still learning and performing on terraces, in gullies, and through online videos.” He explained that the competition aims to bring the audition process closer to these performers, rather than waiting for them to find traditional industry platforms. “And with BLM Music, it’s not just about winning an episode, it’s about giving talented individuals a genuine opportunity to launch their careers and showcase their talent to the world,” he added.
The Competition’s Structure and Opportunities
Once the initial selection process concludes, participants who advance will move to Mumbai for the competition stage. They will train and compete in weekly episodes and interactive sessions under the guidance of their mentors. The singing category will feature a separate panel of Bollywood singers and composers, with names to be announced later.
Additionally, the competition offers potential professional opportunities beyond the contest itself. Singers who impress during The Big Break will be considered for releases through BLM Music, Martis’ record label. Original music emerging from the competition will also be released through the label.
Rajiv Lakshman, who helped develop the format, emphasized the importance of a digital-first approach. “This is one of the most challenging IPs that I created, but also the most fun. The Big Break isn’t a television format retrofitted for the internet. It was designed for these platforms from the first line of the brief,” he said.
The competition will culminate in an on-ground gala finale, which will also be broadcast across the show’s digital platforms. With auditions starting on social media, The Big Break aims to make the discovery process itself an integral part of the entertainment experience.
