BRICS Nations Unite for Sustainable Development in New Delhi
On August 17, 2026, the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi served as the venue for the Senior Officers’ Meeting of the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development, convened under India’s BRICS Chairmanship. The meeting was led by Shri Tanmay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and brought together representatives from all BRICS member countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
During the opening address, Secretary Kumar welcomed the delegates and emphasized their shared commitment to ensuring a sustainable future. He highlighted the evolution of the BRICS alliance, noting its transition from an economic dialogue to a powerful platform addressing critical environmental challenges such as pollution, biodiversity loss, and global warming. The Secretary remarked, “Our partnership has broadened in terms of relevance to sustainable development, climate resilience, and circular economy objectives.”
Kumar acknowledged the guiding vision set forth by India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, which advocates for a people-centric approach in global cooperation. The theme for India’s Chairmanship, ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability,’ reflects this commitment to integrating ecological sustainability with developmental goals.
Key Priorities for Sustainable Development
Throughout India’s tenure as Chair, both the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development have focused on four interconnected areas: promoting sustainable lifestyles, afforestation and disaster resilience, advancing the circular economy, and adaptation strategies.
Kumar pointed out that these priorities mirror the shared environmental challenges faced by BRICS nations and embody their collective resolve to confront them. He stressed the importance of recognizing that climate resilience and sustainable development are interlinked challenges that require comprehensive strategies rather than fragmented solutions.
Strong Commitment and Productive Deliberations
Since the start of India’s BRICS Chairmanship, member countries have engaged in a remarkable 21 virtual thematic and negotiation meetings, along with 10 bilateral consultations and 2 technical webinars. Such extensive dialogue reflects a steadfast commitment to achieve consensus on key priorities, which were discussed during the Senior Officers’ Meeting.
As the meeting drew to a close, Kumar expressed optimism that the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect would continue to guide discussions. Tomorrow, the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting will take place in New Delhi, marking another step forward in the collective environmental agenda.
Delegations from participating BRICS nations expressed their appreciation for India’s leadership during this Chairmanship, commending the productive discussions which fostered an atmosphere of trust and consensus-based decision-making.
