Tata Sons AGM Expected to Be Adjourned; Board Meeting Scheduled for Mid-September

N Chandrasekaran will step down as chairman of Tata Sons when his current term ends on February 20, 2027. His nine-year tenure has significantly transformed one of India’s most influential conglomerates. However, his decision comes amid a standoff with Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, regarding his reappointment.

Tata Sons will convene a board meeting in mid-September to formally acknowledge Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek another term. The meeting will also initiate the succession process, contingent upon the endorsement from the principal shareholder, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT). This gathering follows the annual general meeting, which is expected to be adjourned due to a regulatory freeze affecting another key shareholder, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT).

Chandrasekaran’s decision, communicated on August 12, is not classified as a resignation. He informed the board that he does not wish to be considered for another term. Sources indicate that the board could either request him to reconsider or begin the formal process of identifying his successor. However, the regulatory ban on SRTT complicates the succession process, which cannot formally commence until the ban is lifted before the September 17 board meeting.
