Indian Exporters Briefed on EU Carbon Border Adjustments

The Department of Commerce, in collaboration with the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) and the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), hosted an informative Awareness Session on the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM) Regulations. Held at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi, the event drew approximately 100 participants from the exporting community and industry stakeholders, focusing on preparing Indian exporters for the evolving environmental regulatory landscape.

The technical discussions during the session addressed the EU CBAM, outlining its framework, applicable products, obligations for exporters, and the methodologies for calculating embedded emissions. Attendees also learned about data collection, reporting requirements, and verification mechanisms to ensure compliance. Real-world case studies were presented, particularly concerning the iron, steel, and aluminium sectors, enabling exporters to grasp how these regulations impact their operations.

Providing a platform for interaction, the session facilitated discussions on regulatory and technical questions, allowing attendees to seek clarifications about compliance and reporting facets of CBAM. Participants underscored the significance of staying informed and prepared as sustainability-driven regulations increasingly shape international trade.

Joint Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Shri Amit Verma, addressed the participants, reiterating the necessity for Indian exporters to be well-informed and equipped to address the challenges posed by emerging sustainability regulations. He assured that the Department is committed to creating awareness and fostering understanding among exporters regarding regulatory requirements, while remaining in active dialogue with industry stakeholders to tackle concerns and offer practical solutions.

Shri N. Venkateswaran, CEO of NABCB, emphasized the crucial role of establishing a robust accreditation and verification framework to enhance confidence in emissions-related data, which supports compliance with the CBAM requirements.

Shri Pankaj Chadha, Chairman of EEPC, also pointed out the need for comprehensive awareness throughout the export value chain. He highlighted the essential role of accurate emissions data from suppliers and effective verification systems to ensure compliance for Indian exporters.

The Department of Commerce confirmed its ongoing commitment to engage with exporters, industry associations, and relevant organizations, aiming to bolster awareness and capacity surrounding emerging trade regulations related to sustainability. The session wrapped up with a lively Question and Answer segment, giving participants an opportunity to gain clarity on various elements of the EU CBAM and its implementation processes.
