India’s Semiconductor Sector Advances: 5-6 Chip Projects Set for Commercial Launch by 2026
India is set to have five to six semiconductor projects in commercial production by the end of 2026, according to S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Speaking at a press conference for the upcoming Semicon India 2026 event, Krishnan noted that three major projects from the first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 1.0) have already commenced production. Additional projects are anticipated to be inaugurated before the year concludes.
Krishnan highlighted that the Prime Minister inaugurated the first project on February 28, with two more following shortly after. He expressed confidence that the total would reach five or six by the end of the calendar year. The successful launch of these projects will demonstrate the tangible achievements of ISM 1.0 and enhance India’s reputation as a viable destination for the global semiconductor industry.
Expansion of ISM 2.0
The government is also advancing its semiconductor initiatives through ISM 2.0, which has received approval from the Union Cabinet. This new phase will encompass various sectors, including chip design, manufacturing, advanced packaging, equipment, materials, research and development, and talent development.
Krishnan stated that ISM 2.0 aims to bolster research and development while promoting advanced technologies such as silicon photonics and power semiconductors. A key focus will be on building a skilled workforce for semiconductor manufacturing. While India has a strong presence in semiconductor design, the manufacturing workforce requires further development. Krishnan emphasized the need for training programs to enhance the manufacturing talent pool, which could benefit both India and other countries.
Semicon India 2026 Event
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the fifth edition of Semicon India 2026 on September 17 at the Yashobhoomi International Convention and Expo Centre in New Delhi. The event is expected to attract participation from over 240 international companies, more than 150 renowned speakers, and delegations from over 40 countries.
Krishnan noted that India’s semiconductor market is projected to grow significantly, with domestic demand expected to double from $100 billion to around $200 billion. He expressed optimism that the increasing number of semiconductor projects would create substantial opportunities for global companies and foster industry partnerships and investments.
