Veterans Day 2025: Understanding Open and Closed Businesses and US Observances for the Federal Holiday

Veterans Day 2025 is set to be observed on Tuesday, November 11, across the United States, honoring all individuals who have served in the military during both wartime and peacetime. Originally established as Armistice Day in 1919, the day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize all American veterans. As a federal holiday, many government offices will close, while various businesses and services will operate on modified schedules.

On Veterans Day, most non-essential government offices will be closed, including post offices and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Mail delivery will be suspended nationwide, with only USPS Priority Mail continuing to operate. Schools will generally be closed for the day, although some private institutions and specific districts may choose to remain open. This closure allows communities to honor veterans while providing a day of reflection for students and educators alike.

Financial Institutions and Stock Markets

Banks and credit unions will largely close their doors on Veterans Day. However, customers will still have access to ATMs, online banking, and mobile applications for their transactions. While the bond market will be closed, US stock markets will remain open, allowing traders to continue their activities without interruption. This arrangement ensures that financial operations can proceed, albeit with limited services from traditional banking institutions.

Retail and Delivery Services

Many retail chains and grocery stores, such as Walmart, Costco, and Target, will remain open on Veterans Day. Numerous stores and restaurants are expected to offer special discounts or complimentary meals to veterans as part of nationwide appreciation efforts. Delivery services like UPS and FedEx will operate on modified schedules, ensuring that essential routes continue to function while accommodating the holiday. This approach allows consumers to shop and receive deliveries while honoring those who have served in the military.

Public Services and Upcoming Holidays

Public libraries and DMV offices will be closed on Veterans Day, and local government offices may operate on reduced schedules or shut down entirely. Following Veterans Day, the next federal holiday is Thanksgiving, which will be observed on Thursday, November 27. Christmas Day will follow on December 25, with New Year’s Day marking the first federal holiday of 2026 on January 1. Veterans Day remains one of the 11 official US federal holidays recognized by the Office of Personnel Management, serving as a day of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices made by military personnel.
