TCS Responds to Trump’s Green Card Suspension, Plans to Hire 15,000 Employees

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced on Friday that the recent suspension of the Permanent Labour Certification (PERM) program by the US government will not significantly affect its workforce strategy or client engagements. This statement follows the Trump administration’s decision to suspend eight technology companies, including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Cognizant, Capgemini, Microsoft, and Adobe, from participating in the program.

In a statement, TCS emphasized its commitment to comply with US government directives while focusing on hiring local talent. The company highlighted its robust campus recruitment model and noted that it has established a significant local workforce across 31 offices and delivery centers in the US. TCS stated, “Our workforce strategy in the US is anchored in hiring local talent,” reinforcing its approach to workforce management.

TCS revealed that its PERM applications had been minimal, remaining in “single digits” over the past two years. The company reiterated its plan to hire an additional 15,000 employees in the US over the next five years, stating that the suspension of the program would not impact its workforce strategy or customer engagements.

The suspension is part of a broader crackdown on skilled-worker immigration, with US officials alleging that companies have exploited the system to the detriment of American workers. The US Department of Labor has halted the acceptance and processing of new and pending PERM applications from the affected companies. PERM is a critical step in the employment-based green card process, requiring employers to demonstrate a lack of qualified US workers for the position.

The suspension has faced criticism from Democratic lawmaker Pramila Jayapal, who argued that the Trump administration is undermining legal immigration pathways. She stated, “You don’t fix a broken immigration system by taking a hammer to legal immigration,” emphasizing the importance of the PERM process in ensuring that hiring foreign workers benefits the US economy without harming American workers.

In response to Jayapal’s criticism, US Vice President JD Vance questioned her defense of major technology companies, suggesting that her stance equates to supporting a continuous influx of cheap labor for corporations. Labour Secretary Keith Sonderling announced the suspensions, accusing the affected companies of abusing the visa system at the expense of American workers. The administration also initiated investigations into nine universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, over allegations related to the employment of international students and foreign workers.
