Indian Navy Expands Housing with New Accommodations in Karwar

On October 8, 2026, General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of Defence Staff and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, officially opened new residential facilities for Senior Sailors and Defence Civilians at Naval Base Karwar. The event was attended by Vice Admiral Vivek Dahiya, Director General of Seabird, alongside other senior military officials.

The newly inaugurated accommodations, located East of Manzil Creek and in Amadalli, feature a tower designated for Senior Sailors with 60 dwelling units and another tower containing 60 units for Naval Defence Civilians. Additionally, the facilities cater to 156 personnel from the Defence Security Corps (DSC) and include a kindergarten school for children. These constructions were carried out by M/s NCC Ltd. from Hyderabad, while the installation of essential infrastructure was handled by M/s Cemindia Projects India Ltd.

This new infrastructure is a significant component of Project Seabird Phase IIA, aimed at establishing a robust base for ships and submarines in Karwar. The project’s extensive scope encompasses the construction of a dual-use Naval Air Station, a comprehensive Naval Dockyard, and various logistics facilities to support naval operations. This development is expected to accommodate approximately 10,000 military and civilian personnel along with their families, which will likely stimulate the local economy by boosting industry and tourism, while also creating numerous direct and indirect job opportunities in the Uttara Kannada region.

The project adheres to the standards set by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF & CC) and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Upon completion, it is anticipated to achieve a Gold rating from the IGBC. This initiative also aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy, as more than 90% of the materials and equipment used are sourced domestically.

The inauguration of these facilities signals a step forward in providing vital amenities for the personnel serving at Naval Base Karwar. As the project continues, the positive impact on both military readiness and community development in the region is expected to be profound.
