Five-Day Geriatric Care Training Kicks Off in Diu
Shri Sudhansh Pant, Union Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, inaugurated a comprehensive Five-Day Geriatric Care Training Programme today at the Education Hub in Kevdi, Diu. This initiative, spearheaded by the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), aims to enhance the quality of care provided to senior citizens in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu (DNH&DD).
The collaboration between NISD and the Office of the Collector, Diu, focuses on equipping local frontline workers with the skills necessary to address the unique needs of the elderly population in the region. Joining Shri Pant at the opening were key officials including Dr. Sandeep R Rathod, Joint Secretary, Shri Sajeesh Kumar N, and Shri Gaurav Singh Rajawat, Director of NISD, among others.
Building Capacity for Elderly Care
During the inaugural session, Shri Pant highlighted the program’s objective: to develop a cadre of trained individuals who can provide essential geriatric care. This includes assessing emerging care needs, guiding seniors to government services, and offering emotional and psychosocial support within their communities.
The training has been tailored to fit the specific circumstances of senior citizens in Diu, placing a strong emphasis on enhancing local support mechanisms. With the demographic trend leaning towards an increasing elderly population, this initiative becomes more relevant, particularly for those seniors living alone or those needing help with daily activities.
Practical Training Approach
Shri Pant described the training’s participatory approach, designed to empower participants by translating knowledge into actionable care. Participants will develop an understanding of the psychological, physical, emotional, and social dimensions of aging, alongside mastery of practical skills necessary for dignified and compassionate elder care.
By the end of the five days, approximately 50 Anganwadi workers and grassroots functionaries will be equipped to identify seniors in need of further assistance, raise awareness about available government support, and bolster community-level services for elderly residents.
Comprehensive Curriculum
The curriculum covers key areas such as the aging process, dignity and rights of older persons, the role of families and caregivers, and essential caregiving practices. Topics will also include first aid, communication skills, and the prevention of neglect and abuse against seniors. Special focus will be given to fostering psychosocial well-being and strategies to combat social isolation.
The training will utilize a mix of technical sessions, hands-on demonstrations, and discussions to engage participants fully and address real-world challenges they may face in the field.
A Pledge for Senior Citizen Welfare
To conclude the session, Shri Pant administered the Pledge for the Welfare of Senior Citizens to all participants, underscoring the commitment to improving the lives of elderly individuals.
The collaborative effort between the NISD and the local government signifies a strategic move toward bolstering community-based support systems for older adults, ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment that enhances their quality of life.
