CBFC Approves John Abraham’s ‘The Diplomat’ with Disclaimer

As the release date approaches, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted approval for the political thriller The Diplomat, featuring John Abraham. However, the board has mandated that the filmmakers include a disclaimer emphasizing the significance of maintaining positive relations with neighboring countries. Directed by Shivam Nair, the film draws inspiration from the 2017 repatriation of Uzma Ahmed and received its certification on March 6, following a screening by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

MEA Review Ensures Diplomatic Sensitivity

According to reports, the MEA’s review of The Diplomat was conducted to ensure that the film’s storyline would not adversely affect India’s diplomatic relations with Pakistan. After the screening, the CBFC required the inclusion of a visual and audio disclaimer. This disclaimer clarifies that while the film is inspired by actual events, it is a dramatized representation and does not reflect the official position of the Indian government. Given the film’s setting in Pakistan, a region fraught with political sensitivities, the disclaimer was deemed crucial. A source familiar with the situation stated, “Considering the film is centred on international diplomacy, a disclaimer was necessary to underline that while inspired by real events, the geopolitical representation is fictionalized. The film is set in Pakistan, and given the sensitivities of India-Pakistan relations, this step was crucial.” This directive aims to mitigate any potential backlash regarding the film’s portrayal of sensitive diplomatic issues.

Real Names Used, Minor Edits Required

Despite the requirement for a disclaimer, the CBFC has allowed the use of real names in the film. This includes Uzma Ahmed’s name for the character played by Sadia Khateeb, along with references to notable figures such as former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and diplomat JP Singh, portrayed by Abraham. However, the certification process did necessitate some minor edits. For instance, a violent scene involving a young boy was trimmed, and an expletive was muted to align with the board’s guidelines. The decision to retain real names while implementing edits reflects the CBFC’s approach to balancing creative expression with the need for responsible storytelling, especially in a politically charged narrative. This careful consideration underscores the importance of the film’s themes in the context of contemporary international relations.

‘The Diplomat’: A Gripping Tale of Real Events

The Diplomat tells the compelling story of Uzma Ahmed, who, in May 2017, fled her husband’s home in Pakistan and sought refuge at the Indian Embassy in Islamabad, claiming she was coerced into marriage. John Abraham stars as Indian diplomat JP Singh, who played a pivotal role in her repatriation. Produced by Abraham in collaboration with T-Series, the film aims to shed light on the intricate dynamics of international diplomacy while delivering an engaging narrative.

With the CBFC’s clearance and the necessary disclaimer in place, The Diplomat is on track for its scheduled release on March 14, promising to captivate audiences with its blend of drama and real-life inspiration.
