Paresh Rawal Reveals OMG 2 Originated from His Concept, Exits Over Script Alterations
Paresh Rawal has made headlines by claiming that he was the original creator of the concept behind the film “OMG 2.” In a recent conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, the veteran actor expressed his disappointment over not receiving credit for his contributions to the film’s early development. He noted that significant changes were made to the project after Akshay Kumar joined the cast.
Rawal’s Original Concept Development
Rawal shared that he first approached filmmaker Amit Rai after being inspired by the film “Road to Sangam.” He stated, “I had approached Amit Rai, the director of Road to Sangam, and asked him if he was planning another film. I admire him a lot. I told him, ‘I have an idea. Let’s sit and write it.’ I told him I wasn’t a writer, but I could contribute ideas and help identify where we were going wrong because I understand screenplay to some extent.”
He elaborated on the initial storyline, which revolved around a boy whose life spirals out of control after a video of him caught in a compromising situation goes viral. Rawal explained, “The story was about a boy who gets caught masturbating, and a video of the incident goes viral, making his life miserable. His father was a tourist guide at the Khajuraho temple. Amit suggested making him a part-time priest at the Mahakal Temple.” The duo aimed to create a film that was both educational and entertaining, steering clear of vulgarity.
Changes After Akshay Kumar’s Involvement
According to Rawal, the project was never intended to be a sequel to the original “OMG” and did not include a divine character. He stated, “Our main idea was to have a biker guiding the father, not God. In the first OMG, God appeared because the case was against God. But this film was about a father’s fight to get justice for his son. There was no need for a divine character.” He initially considered actors Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan for the biker role, deliberately avoiding Akshay Kumar to prevent assumptions of a sequel.
Rawal later learned that Akshay Kumar expressed interest in the film after the script reached him through producer Ashwin Varde. He recalled, “I was under the impression that we were still figuring things out. We even had a meeting with Vipul Shah of Optimystix. They also asked about Akshay, and I said if I wanted to make it with him, I would have approached him directly.” He noted that the script had been tentatively labeled “OMG 2” due to its similar genre.
Rawal’s Decision to Walk Away
Despite Akshay Kumar’s request for Rawal to join the project, the actor ultimately declined, stating that he no longer recognized the story. “I spoke to Akshay. He asked me to do the film. I told him, ‘No. This isn’t the film I had envisioned. There is no role of God in this story,'” Rawal explained. He emphasized his deep connection to the original script, saying, “I had lived with the script from the beginning. I knew exactly what it was supposed to be. That’s why I walked away.”
Rawal expressed his disappointment over not receiving any acknowledgment for his contributions, stating, “The saddest part is that I wasn’t even given credit for the story or the concept. My name wasn’t mentioned anywhere.” He added that several industry figures, including Amit, Akshay, and others, were aware of his original idea. “Ajay and Salman probably said no because of the subject. They thought it could become controversial. I tried explaining the concept to them,” he concluded.
