UIDAI Marks Major Success in Biometric Updates for Kids
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has reached a remarkable achievement in its mission to carry out Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU) for school children. The initiative has successfully completed over 20 million MBUs nationwide, providing a crucial service for students across the country.
The impressive results stem from UIDAI’s strategic partnership with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+). This collaboration facilitates real-time visibility of children’s MBU status and allows for seamless updates at schools.
Comprehensive School Coverage
Launched in September 2025, the special drive has successfully engaged over 156,000 schools. Through dedicated camps held at the school level and effective outreach by UIDAI and education departments, children can conveniently complete their Aadhaar biometric updates. This initiative ensures that biometric services come directly to students, enhancing accessibility for millions of young learners.
Understanding Aadhaar Requirements for Children
The Aadhaar enrolment process for children under five years includes the collection of demographic information and photographs, but it does not involve capturing fingerprints or iris data as these features are still developing. The MBU process is critical to ensure that a child’s Aadhaar has the most current biometric information.
Specifically, biometric updates are mandatory when a child turns five and again at the age of fifteen. Keeping this information updated is essential for a smoother Aadhaar authentication experience, which is vital for progressing through school and higher education, as well as accessing various government services that require Aadhaar verification.
Support for Parents and Guardians
To further facilitate the process, UIDAI has waived MBU fees for children aged 7 to 15 years starting from October 1, 2025, for one year. Additionally, MBU remains free for children aged 5 to 7 and 15 to 17, making the service accessible without cost until September 30, 2026. This initiative is designed to eliminate any financial barriers that may prevent timely updates.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to prioritize the MBU process for their children. Failure to do so may hinder the authentication process for accessing numerous government benefits or participating in competitive examinations like NEET, JEE, and CUET.
UIDAI continues to reach out to families, emphasizing the importance of keeping Aadhaar records up to date to avoid complications in the future.
