Raichur Transforms Dumpsite into Eco-Friendly Miyawaki Forest

Raichur, Karnataka, has achieved a remarkable environmental milestone by transforming the Yakalaspura dumpsite into a vibrant green space. Through the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0), the city has successfully processed around 62,252 metric tonnes of waste, reclaiming nearly 22 acres of land. This initiative not only enhances urban land use but also marks a significant step towards sustainable environmental practices.

A Model for Sustainable Urban Development

The Yakalaspura site, which sprawls across 35 acres, was once a major source of environmental and health issues due to decades of accumulated municipal solid waste. This situation led to a severe threat from leachate, unpleasant odors, and pollution affecting nearby communities. In response, the Raichur City Corporation embarked on a comprehensive legacy waste remediation project aimed at addressing these critical concerns.

Successful Remediation Efforts

Through diligent scientific intervention, the city has successfully processed over 62,000 metric tonnes of waste. This transformative effort has reclaimed nearly 22 acres of valuable land, drastically mitigating environmental risks and beautifying the area. The project represents a significant achievement in the city’s endeavors to enhance urban sanitation and environmental management.

Creating a Green Legacy

The remediation work culminated in a planting initiative that began on June 5, 2026. In a bid to turn the reclaimed land into a thriving ecological haven, Raichur City Corporation has initiated the development of a Miyawaki forest. This innovative approach underscores the city’s commitment to ecological restoration by utilizing approximately 5–7 acres of the remediated site.

In collaboration with Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) and New India Space Limited, the city has introduced 60,000 saplings into the area. The planted species include bamboo and other native plants that will promote soil restoration, carbon sequestration, and increased biodiversity. It is projected that within a year, the area will be successfully afforested, establishing a flourishing green cover.

A Landmark Inauguration

The transformation of Yakalaspura was officially inaugurated on World Environment Day by Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. This ceremony highlighted the importance of such initiatives in promoting environmental sustainability across India.

Setting a Precedent for Other Cities

The Yakalaspura project serves as a powerful example of effective urban governance and commitment to cleanliness. By converting a long-standing environmental issue into a thriving ecological space, Raichur City Corporation has established a replicable model for other cities striving towards garbage-free and sustainable urban futures.
