Tata Steel Earns Gold Employer Recognition for LGBT+ Inclusion for Fifth Year Running

Tata Steel has been awarded the prestigious Gold Employer title by the India Workplace Equality Index (IWEI) for the fifth consecutive year, showcasing its steadfast commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace that champions LGBT+ rights and broader diversity initiatives.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

In a competitive landscape featuring over 100 organizations at the 2025 IWEI Summit & Awards, Tata Steel’s recognition underscores the Company’s relentless efforts to integrate diversity and inclusion into its core business practices and policies. The accolade reflects an enduring vision to create an environment where all employees can thrive.

Progressive Practices and Policies

Atrayee Sanyal, Chief People Officer of Tata Steel Group, articulated the significance of this achievement, stating that it cements Tata Steel’s place as one of India’s most forward-thinking employers. She emphasized the importance of a diverse workforce as a strategic driver of innovation and reiterated the Company’s commitment to fostering an environment where every employee feels acknowledged and respected.

Pioneering Initiatives in Workplace Inclusion

Tata Steel has marked several groundbreaking milestones in its journey toward inclusion. Among these initiatives are the introduction of the world’s first all-women shift in mining operations at Noamundi, and the establishment of an all-women firefighting team in Jamshedpur—both firsts in the Indian steel sector. Additionally, women are now actively employed across all shifts at the Kalinganagar facility, further bolstering diversity in traditionally male-dominated roles.

Enhancing Employee Benefits and Support

The Company has also revamped its Parental Benefit Policy to promote equitable caregiving and reinforce its support for employees. Recognizing the importance of shared caregiving responsibilities, the updated policy promotes overall employee well-being. Moreover, Tata Steel’s Gender Reassignment Policy provides its staff with compassionate support for gender affirmation, promoting a holistic approach to inclusivity.

A Decade of Commitment to Equality

Tata Steel’s dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion commenced in 2015 with the launch of the MOSAIC initiative. This program actively addresses the inclusion of women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, persons with disabilities, and more through five key pillars: sensitization, infrastructure, recruitment, retention and development, and celebration.

Understanding the IWEI

The India Workplace Equality Index serves as the country’s foremost benchmarking tool, assessing employers’ commitment to LGBT+ inclusion across nine critical areas—ranging from policies and benefits to employee engagement and leadership involvement.
