Bihar’s Makhana Sees International Success with Greek Export
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the export of 1 metric ton of Popped (Phool) Makhana from Purnea, Bihar, to Greece. This milestone not only highlights the global demand for Bihar’s traditional Makhana but also aims to enhance farmer earnings through promising export channels.
Indo Global Export, based in Belouri, sourced the consignment, which will be shipped to Greece via S. S Foods Exports Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi. The shipment is set to depart from Mundra Port in India to reach Piraeus Port in Greece.
This export venture is expected to offer better price realization for Makhana producers compared to the current domestic market rates, indicating the lucrative potential of international markets. By creating connections between local farmers and foreign buyers, such initiatives are paving the way for enhanced earnings in the agricultural sector.
Bihar plays a pivotal role in Makhana production, contributing around 80-85% to India’s total output. The cultivation spans over 35,000 hectares across 10 districts in the state. Support for this sector comes from organizations such as Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, and ICAR-National Research Centre for Makhana, Darbhanga, which provide valuable technical assistance.
The flag-off event was presided over by Agriculture Minister of Bihar, Shri Vijay Kumar Sinha, alongside APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev and other notable officials from the state’s agriculture department. Sinha emphasized the importance of this export as a significant achievement for Bihar’s Makhana industry as it continues to penetrate international markets. He noted that India exported over 7,000 metric tons of Makhana and value-added products valued at USD 22 million during the fiscal year 2025-26, spanning over 20 countries.
The Bihar government is actively engaged in developing an Agri Export Policy aimed at boosting farmers’ incomes through enhanced export opportunities. Additionally, investment in packhouses has been made to strengthen the Makhana export chain. Sinha commended APEDA for its unwavering efforts in expanding Makhana exports.
The shipment from Purnea to Greece represents a growing trend toward integrating Bihar’s Makhana producers and exporters with international markets. With its deep-rooted cultural ties to the region, Makhana has become a key player in India’s agricultural export landscape.
APEDA continues to facilitate market linkages and aid exporters in promoting Indian Makhana internationally. The expansion of Makhana exports into European markets creates new opportunities for Indian farmers and plants the seeds for diversifying trade beyond traditional markets. These initiatives connect Bihar’s Makhana producers to global demand while enhancing their financial returns and increasing the involvement of producer groups in the export value chain.
