Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport reported that almost all of its departing flights—420 in total—were canceled, marking a staggering 99% cancellation rate for the day. Major airport hubs, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, faced significant disruptions, alongside New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. The widespread cancellations have left many travelers stranded and scrambling for alternative arrangements.
Airlines Respond with Drastic Schedule Cuts
In response to the storm, airlines have slashed their schedules dramatically. American Airlines canceled over 1,400 flights on Sunday, representing about 45% of its planned operations. Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines each reported more than 1,200 cancellations, while United Airlines grounded over 860 flights. JetBlue faced a particularly severe impact, scrapping more than 570 flights, which accounted for roughly 71% of its schedule for the day. The airlines are working to manage the fallout from the storm, but the sheer volume of cancellations has created a chaotic travel environment.

For travelers caught in the storm’s aftermath, airlines recommend taking immediate action. Those already at the airport should get in line to speak with a customer service representative, while those at home or in hotels should contact their airline’s reservations staff online or by phone. Passengers are also encouraged to explore alternate flight options while waiting for assistance. Most airlines will rebook passengers on later flights without additional charges, subject to seat availability.
