Rakul Preet Singh Addresses Income Tax Searches, Clarifies Stance on Foreign Remittances

Actress Rakul Preet Singh has publicly addressed the recent Income Tax Department searches conducted in Mumbai, which are part of an ongoing investigation into suspected financial irregularities within the film industry. In her first statement regarding the matter, Rakul firmly denied any involvement in illegal foreign remittances and clarified that the searches were not related to her.
Rakul Preet Singh Denies Involvement
In her statement, Rakul expressed her desire to clarify her position amidst what she described as unverified and sensationalized media coverage. “It’s heartbreaking to see that there’s a growing trend amongst the self-styled online reporters & some mainstream media journalists to sensationalize the news without verifying facts,” she stated.
She specifically refuted claims linking her to the alleged financial irregularities. “The search was not pertaining to me,” Rakul emphasized, noting her background in an Armed Forces family and her entry into the film industry without any influential connections. The actress highlighted her commitment to her responsibilities as a citizen, stating, “I have been paying my taxes since the age of 20” and asserting that she is a “responsible, law-abiding citizen.” Furthermore, she declared, “I am not involved in any kind of illegal foreign remittance in personal capacity or on behalf of any Production house.”
Addressing Allegations of Benami Property
Rakul also tackled speculation regarding undisclosed assets, firmly denying any involvement with benami properties. “I would also add here that I do not hold any Benami property on behalf of anyone anywhere in the country or abroad,” she clarified. She further stated that she has never received any property as a gift and does not accept expensive gifts as a matter of principle.
Her statements come in light of the ongoing investigation, which has raised questions about financial dealings in the film industry. Rakul’s assertion of her integrity and transparency is a direct response to the swirling rumors and allegations.
Call for Media Accountability
In concluding her statement, Rakul urged media outlets and individuals who published what she deemed inaccurate reports to retract them and clarify the facts. “I urge all those who published these false, malicious and speculative reports to retract them and clarify the facts,” she said.
Acknowledging the commercial pressures faced by media organizations, Rakul emphasized that such pressures should not compromise accuracy or an individual’s reputation. “I understand that everyone running a media business however big has their own commercial pressures. But it cannot come at the cost of facts. And certainly not at the cost of someone’s reputation and livelihood,” she added.
On September 28, the Mumbai Income Tax Department conducted searches at around 12 locations reportedly linked to Rakul, her father-in-law and producer Vashu Bhagnani, and Panorama Studios, associated with producer Kumar Mangat Pathak. The searches were part of an investigation into suspected irregularities involving film financing and overseas transactions. Reports indicated that officials were examining documents, bank records, and financial transactions as part of the probe. However, no specific amount, formal finding, or charge has been publicly announced by the authorities. A search by an investigative agency does not by itself establish wrongdoing, and the investigation remains ongoing.
