Middle East Turmoil Resurfaces: Oil Prices Surge 4% Amid US-Iran Tensions
Oil prices surged on Monday, driven by escalating military tensions in the Middle East. Crude prices rose by 4% as renewed conflict between Iran and the United States heightened fears regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy passage. As of 7:30 AM, Brent crude was trading at $79.26 a barrel, up 4.28%, while WTI crude increased by 4.37% to $74.53 a barrel.
The price spike followed Iran’s expansion of military strikes to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates over the weekend, alongside U.S. retaliatory attacks on Iranian positions. This escalation has raised concerns about shipping safety through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that commercial traffic was ongoing, Iran had previously declared the waterway closed after an incident involving a vessel on an unauthorized route. Shiptracking data indicated that only six vessels passed through the strait on Sunday, the lowest number in five weeks.
Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the U.S. military actions, labeling them a “flagrant violation” of the UN Charter. The ministry warned that any country allowing its territory to be used for military operations against Iran could become a target for Iranian defensive measures. Iran also dismissed U.S. claims regarding recent discussions in Muscat, asserting that the talks were limited to managing the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the security of international shipping routes.
The renewed hostilities have cast doubt on the interim U.S.-Iran agreement reached last month, which aimed to reopen the strait and resolve the conflict after 60 days of negotiations. The International Energy Agency reported that global oil supply increased by 4.1 million barrels per day in June following the agreement, although output remained significantly below pre-war levels. U.S. Central Command stated that recent military operations aimed to diminish Iran’s capacity to threaten civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
