Major Overhaul of e-Aadhaar System Expected: Elimination of Photocopies
In a significant move to modernize the Aadhaar system, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to launch a new QR code-based application that will allow users to share digital versions of their Aadhaar cards. This initiative aims to eliminate the need for physical photocopies, making the process more efficient and secure. Additionally, UIDAI plans to streamline the procedure for updating personal information, reducing the necessity for in-person visits to Aadhaar centers.
Streamlined Digital Sharing of Aadhaar
The upcoming QR code-based application will revolutionize how users interact with their Aadhaar cards. Individuals will have the option to share either complete or masked versions of their Aadhaar digitally. This feature is designed to enhance security and prevent misuse, as users will retain control over their personal data. UIDAI’s Chief Executive Officer, Bhuvnesh Kumar, emphasized that the application will facilitate various uses, including hotel check-ins and identity verification during rail travel. The introduction of this technology is expected to significantly reduce the risk of fraudulent activities associated with Aadhaar registration.
Automated Updates and Reduced Visits
UIDAI is also working on a new procedure that will automate updates to personal information, such as addresses and phone numbers, through integration with official databases. This means that users will no longer need to visit Aadhaar centers for most updates, except for biometric submissions. The integration will utilize data from various sources, including birth certificates, driving licenses, and PAN cards. This initiative aims to simplify the process for citizens while also minimizing the potential for fraudulent document submissions. Furthermore, discussions are underway to include electricity bill records to further enhance user convenience.
Collaboration with State Governments and Educational Boards
To combat fraud in property registrations, UIDAI is collaborating with state governments to implement Aadhaar verification during property registration processes. This partnership aims to ensure that individuals registering properties are verified through their Aadhaar details, thereby reducing instances of fraud. Additionally, UIDAI is in talks with educational boards, including CBSE, to facilitate biometric and data updates for children. This initiative targets two critical age brackets, ensuring that updates are completed for approximately 18 crore cases of children needing Aadhaar updates.
Future Developments and User Convenience
UIDAI’s efforts extend beyond just the Aadhaar application. The authority is also working with various organizations, including security agencies and hospitality establishments, to expand Aadhaar services to sectors where its use is not currently mandatory. This broadening of Aadhaar’s application aims to enhance user convenience and security across different domains. As the new application rolls out, UIDAI anticipates that users will be able to manage most of their Aadhaar-related tasks from the comfort of their homes, further simplifying the experience while maintaining the integrity of the system.
