Karan Johar Unveils Dharma Productions’ First Malayalam Film Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran: Odiyan

Dharma Productions and Prithviraj Productions are joining forces to create “Odiyan: The Age of Illusion,” a grand cinematic venture steeped in the folklore and cultural mythology of 19th-century Kerala. This film, produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Supriya Menon, is directed by Rahul Sadasivan, known for his previous works like “Bhoothakaalam” and “Diés Irae.” Notably, this marks Dharma Productions’ inaugural foray into Malayalam cinema, a significant milestone for the renowned film studio.
A Tale of Myth and Reality
At the heart of “Odiyan: The Age of Illusion” lies a gripping narrative centered around a fearsome shape-shifter from Kerala’s rich legends. This character unleashes chaos upon a powerful matriarchal household, igniting a fierce struggle between truth and illusion. The film promises to weave a tapestry of myth, menace, and psychological depth, showcasing Sadasivan’s unique ability to capture the essence of Kerala’s folklore.
Karan Johar, the producer from Dharma Productions, expressed his admiration for Malayalam cinema, stating, “I have been a great admirer of Malayalam cinema for a long time, and have always wanted to be part of that world. The craft, the courage, the way its filmmakers trust their audiences – it is something I have watched with genuine awe.” He added that the collaboration felt timely, emphasizing, “Odiyan: The Age of Illusion is the kind of film that deserves the biggest possible canvas, and I am glad we get to give it just that.”
Expanding Horizons in Storytelling
Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions, shared insights into the significance of this collaboration. He remarked, “Malayalam cinema represents everything we respect in storytelling, fearless creative ambition, deep cultural rootedness, and a connection with audiences that is genuinely earned.” Mehta highlighted that entering the Malayalam film industry is a natural progression for Dharma, stating, “Collaborating with Prithviraj Productions and Rahul Sadasivan on Odiyan: The Age of Illusion is a proud moment for us, and one that signals exactly where we are headed.”
Prithviraj Sukumaran, who stars in and produces the film, emphasized the cultural importance of the Odiyan legend. He said, “The Odiyan is not just a myth, it is a piece of Kerala’s identity, a legend that has travelled through generations and continues to hold a powerful place in our cultural consciousness.” He expressed excitement about the collaboration, noting that it combines two shared visions for the project.
A Vision Rooted in Folklore
Supriya Menon, Director of Prithviraj Productions, welcomed Dharma Productions into the Malayalam cinema landscape. She stated, “As a company that’s been consistently trying to improve Malayalam cinema, where storytelling is championed by its audience and work on different genres – we are happy to welcome Dharma Productions into the disruptive world of Malayalam cinema.” Menon expressed hope that “Odiyan” would elevate the cinematic experience for Malayalam audiences.
Director Rahul Sadasivan shared his artistic vision for the film, saying, “Folklore has always been a powerful source of fear because it exists in the space between memory, belief, and imagination.” He aims to bring one of Kerala’s most enduring legends to life, emphasizing the film’s atmospheric and emotional depth. Sadasivan concluded, “I’m excited to collaborate with Dharma Productions and Prithviraj Productions in bringing this vision to life.”
