Jon Favreau’s LION Set to Debut in India on August 27, Showcasing the Adventures of Lion Cub Kio
National Geographic is gearing up to launch its new wildlife series, LION, on August 27. Executive produced by renowned filmmakers Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, the series chronicles the life of Kio, a lion cub in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Viewers will witness Kio’s transformation from a vulnerable young cub into a mature lion, offering an intimate look at the challenges and triumphs he faces along the way.
A Four-Year Journey in the Maasai Mara
Filmed entirely in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, LION has been in production for an impressive four years. The dedicated team, which included local Kenyan filmmakers, spent nearly 1,400 days on set across 52 shoots, closely following the same pride of lions. The series aims to provide a deep exploration of Kio’s growth while delving into themes of family, survival, courage, and leadership. According to the creators, this project marks the first natural history documentary to capture a lion’s complete journey from cub to king.
Jon Favreau shared his thoughts on the experience, stating, “After tracking the lions in the field for four years, the pride never ceased to surprise us. What Kio endures and eventually becomes is extraordinary.” He added, “Watching this hero’s journey unfold against the backdrop of nature was incredible to witness.”
A Unique Musical Score
LION also boasts an original score led by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, alongside Niccolò Pacella and George Hutson Warren from Bleeding Fingers Music Group. The soundtrack features local singers, traditional instruments, and even lion roars, enhancing the immersive experience of the series. Additional vocals by the Nairobi Chamber Chorus contribute to the rich soundscape. The theme was co-composed by Lebo M., Andrew Christie, and Zimmer, incorporating subtle nods to The Lion King, linking this project to Favreau’s previous work while maintaining its documentary essence.
Alok Jain, Head of Hindi and English Entertainment Business at JioStar, emphasized the series’ unique storytelling approach. He remarked that LION combines “patience, access and cinematic filmmaking” to narrate Kio’s story. Jain noted, “LION is a powerful story of survival, family and leadership, told through the extraordinary journey of Kio.” He highlighted that following Kio for four years allowed filmmakers to capture his remarkable transformation from a vulnerable cub into a young lion.
