Goa Shipyard Delivers Advanced Patrol Vessel to Indian Coast Guard
In a significant advancement for India’s naval capabilities, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has officially handed over the ICGS Ajit, a cutting-edge Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), to the Indian Coast Guard. This milestone was celebrated during a ceremonial event in Goa, further showcasing the nation’s commitment to indigenous shipbuilding.
The ceremony included notable attendees such as GSL Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, alongside senior officials from both GSL and the Indian Coast Guard, including Director (Operations) RAdm Nelson D’Souza, NM, IN (Retd), and Commanding Officer of ICGS Ajit, Comdt (JG) Manish Talan.
Highlights of ICGS Ajit
Measuring 51.43 meters in length and 8 meters in width, the ICGS Ajit possesses a displacement of 330 tonnes and is designed with over 65% indigenous content. This reflects the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defense sector and aligns with the government’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Powered by twin marine diesel engines and featuring controllable pitch propellers, the ICGS Ajit achieves a top speed exceeding 27 knots. Its operational range extends to 1,500 nautical miles, supported by an advanced integrated machinery control system that enhances efficiency, readiness, and sustainability.
Key Roles and Missions
ICGS Ajit will operate with a crew comprising 6 officers and 35 sailors. The vessel is equipped to tackle various critical maritime security challenges, including fisheries protection, surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), coastal patrolling, anti-smuggling efforts, anti-piracy operations, and search and rescue missions.
The induction of ICGS Ajit significantly strengthens the Indian Coast Guard’s ability to protect the nation’s coastlines and offshore regions, thereby contributing to the overarching maritime security framework of India.
