India’s Market Crucial for Biscoff Maker’s Global Brand Aspirations

Your next pack of Biscoff cookies will soon be produced locally in India, a move that promises to make the beloved Belgian treat more affordable for consumers. Lotus Bakeries, the company behind Biscoff, has partnered with Mondelez, the maker of Cadbury chocolates and Oreo cookies, to establish local production in Rajasthan. This strategic collaboration aims to tap into India’s growing market potential as Lotus Bakeries seeks to expand Biscoff’s global presence. The cookies are expected to hit retail shelves and online platforms within 45 days.

The decision to manufacture Biscoff cookies in India is a significant step for Lotus Bakeries, which has been in operation for nearly a century. Jan Boone, the CEO of Lotus Bakeries, emphasized the importance of the Indian market in the company’s ambition to become the third-largest global brand in the cookie segment. By producing locally, the company aims to reduce costs and make Biscoff more accessible to Indian consumers. Boone noted that the distribution landscape in India is complex, making it essential to partner with a local player like Mondelez to effectively reach consumers. The collaboration marks the first time Lotus Bakeries has outsourced production of Biscoff to another company, highlighting the brand’s commitment to growth in the Indian market.

Targeting Gen Z Consumers

Lotus Bakeries is particularly focused on attracting India’s large population of Gen Z consumers, who represent over 25% of the country’s demographic. Boone pointed out that Biscoff has gained immense popularity on social media, with nearly 1.8 billion views on platforms like TikTok. This demographic is seen as a key target for the brand, and Boone expects India to become one of Biscoff’s top markets in the coming years. While the specifics of the partnership with Mondelez remain undisclosed, Boone indicated that it has a long-term perspective, suggesting that if successful, the collaboration could continue for years to come.

Competitive Pricing and Market Potential

To ensure wider accessibility, Biscoff’s pricing strategy has been designed to be affordable for Indian consumers. The cookies will be available in various pack sizes, with low unit packs priced at Rs 10, mid-sized packs at Rs 80, and larger packs at Rs 110. Currently, premium cookies account for only 3.5-4% of the local biscuit market, indicating significant growth potential for Biscoff. Samir Jain, president of Mondelez India, expressed confidence in the opportunity to premiumize the cookie market in India, positioning Biscoff as a high-quality option for consumers looking to enhance their tea and coffee experiences.

Future Collaborations and Innovations

In addition to local cookie production, the partnership between Mondelez and Lotus Bakeries includes plans to develop co-branded chocolate products for international markets and to launch Biscoff ice creams in Europe. This collaboration reflects a broader strategy to leverage each company’s strengths in the snacking sector. As Biscoff prepares to enter the Indian market, it will face competition from established brands like Parle, ITC, and Britannia. However, with its unique caramelized flavor and strong brand identity, Biscoff aims to carve out a significant share of the growing cookie market in India.
