Yolo Meets SIP: Gen Z’s Impact on Financial Strategies and Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Gen Z in India is redefining financial habits, emphasizing independence and investment over mere saving. A 2025 EY report reveals that this generation, which comprises one in five Gen Z individuals globally, is increasingly inclined towards digital-first financial services. Notably, 83% of Gen Z prefers these services, with 48% maintaining multiple bank accounts and 44% actively exploring various banking features.
Financial decisions are heavily influenced by their economic circumstances. A Deloitte survey indicates that 54% of Indian Gen Z respondents have postponed significant life choices due to financial constraints. Additionally, 37% feel they cannot afford homeownership, while 29% report financial insecurity. Almost half of this demographic, 47%, live paycheck to paycheck, with financial independence cited as the primary career goal by 19% of respondents.
Spending Patterns
Recent analysis from SalarySe challenges the stereotype that Gen Z primarily spends on lifestyle. More than 70% of their monthly expenditures are directed towards bills, subscriptions, groceries, financial services, shopping, and food. Bills and subscriptions account for 20.1% of their spending, while groceries make up 15.7%. Travel constitutes only 5% of their monthly expenses.
The data also shows that as Gen Z ages, their spending shifts. While discretionary spending remains constant at 32% for both 18-23 and 24-29-year-olds, essential spending increases from 50% to 59%. Nirav R Karkera, Head of Research at W by Groww, notes that this generation’s approach to personal finance is markedly different from that of previous generations.
From Saving to Investing
Interest in investing among Gen Z is on the rise, although there is a notable gap between awareness and actual participation. A SEBI survey found that 66% of Gen Z is aware of at least one securities-market product, compared to 62% of millennials and 56% of Gen X+. However, only 9% actively invest in these products, with 6% in mutual funds or ETFs and 5% in stocks.
The potential for new investors is significant, as 56% of those who plan to invest are from Gen Z. The preference for learning about investing is also evolving, with 81% favoring video-based educational content, particularly short tutorials.
Mistakes to Avoid
Despite their financial awareness, Gen Z faces challenges in balancing risk and reward. Financial planner Rohit Shah identifies three common mistakes: chasing quick profits, neglecting diversification, and skipping foundational financial principles. He warns against impulsive investments driven by trends, such as direct stocks or cryptocurrencies, without understanding the underlying risks.
Karkera emphasizes the importance of building a solid financial foundation before engaging in speculative investments. He advises starting with an emergency fund and securing adequate insurance before exploring high-risk opportunities.
Managing Debt
The appeal of debt, through options like Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) and credit cards, poses risks for Gen Z. Shah suggests that total EMIs should not exceed 30% of take-home pay. He differentiates between good debt, which contributes to future assets, and bad debt, which funds immediate consumption.
Karkera cautions that the allure of cheap credit can create a false sense of affordability. He stresses the need for a clear understanding of total liabilities and the importance of planning for potential financial setbacks.
What Should Your Money Strategy Be?
At 21-22, Gen Z can maximize savings, with rates of 70-80% being realistic. Shah recommends maintaining an emergency buffer and starting long-term investments early. Karkera outlines a priority order for financial management: defining essential living expenses, building contingency funds, securing insurance, and systematically investing for the future.
Surveys indicate that Gen Z is more financially conscious than stereotypes suggest. They are learning to manage money digitally and are gradually shifting towards long-term investment strategies.
