International Workshop Launches New Efforts in Tiger Conservation
In a significant move for wildlife conservation, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, inaugurated a two-day International Workshop in New Delhi focused on the theme ‘Tiger Landscapes: Conservation, Bioeconomy, and Ecotourism as Pillars for Livelihood and Income Generation.’ The event, held on September 2-3, 2026, is organized in collaboration with the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
The workshop aims to enhance dialogue among representatives from tiger-range countries, emphasizing the importance of recognizing tiger habitats as valuable natural resources. Dignitaries at the event included senior officials from various ministries and organizations, fostering a collaborative environment to explore how conservation efforts can bolster sustainable livelihoods and local economies.
Integrated Approach to Conservation
During the inaugural address, Minister Yadav highlighted India’s achievements under Project Tiger, affirming that the conservation of tigers is deeply tied to the health of surrounding ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, and rivers. He pointed out that tiger landscapes are crucial as they provide essential ecosystem services, such as water security and biodiversity conservation. The minister emphasized the need to shift towards integrated approaches that not only protect these majestic creatures but also support local economic development.
Collaborative Framework for Future Initiatives
Yadav articulated the critical need to base conservation efforts on harmony between humanity and nature. He noted that land conservation directly correlates with food security and the survival of human populations. As challenges such as desertification and soil degradation escalate, the protection of tiger landscapes becomes even more imperative. He urged workshop participants to integrate traditional knowledge into policymaking, fostering sustainable social and economic development while protecting natural habitats.
Strengthening Partnerships for Conservation
Significant progress in collaborative efforts was evident as the International Big Cat Alliance and the Asian Development Bank formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation on landscape conservation, sustainable development, and knowledge sharing. Ms. Mia Oka, Country Director for India at ADB, remarked on the critical role India can play in sharing its extensive conservation experience with other big cat range countries.
Global Participation and Cooperative Knowledge Sharing
This workshop has attracted esteemed international experts and government representatives from countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal, and Vietnam. It serves as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, promoting collaborative approaches to landscape conservation while aligning with sustainable development goals. As participants shared ideas and best practices, the collective focus remains on bolstering tiger conservation efforts globally.
