India Reiterates Support for Myanmar’s Peace Efforts
In a significant diplomatic gesture, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla emphasized India’s earnest desire for peace and stability in Myanmar during a meeting with a parliamentary delegation from the Southeast Asian nation. Led by Dr. Pwint San, Chairperson of the International Relations Committee, the delegation is in India to participate in a capacity-building program organized by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE).
Shri Birla welcomed the delegation and highlighted the deep-rooted ties between India and Myanmar, underpinned by shared civilizational links and a common Buddhist heritage. He reiterated that Myanmar occupies a vital role in India’s foreign policy frameworks, which include the Act East policy, Neighbourhood First, and the broader Indo-Pacific strategy. Bilateral relations encompass a wide range of areas, from politics and security to trade and humanitarian assistance, reflecting a robust partnership.
Commitment to Development and Democracy
The Lok Sabha Speaker also noted India’s historical support for Myanmar, emphasizing that India has consistently been among the first to provide assistance during challenging times. Regular high-level engagements between the leadership of both nations have further strengthened this relationship. Shri Birla expressed India’s readiness to share its robust experiences in parliamentary institutions, democratic traditions, and procedural frameworks to aid Myanmar’s journey towards building strong and inclusive democratic institutions.
Modernizing Electoral Processes
In discussing India’s democratic evolution since the implementation of its constitution in 1950, Shri Birla pointed out the significant strides made in modernizing the electoral process. He cited the introduction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in 2004, followed by the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system, both measures aimed at enhancing transparency and voter trust.
Referring to Myanmar’s recent electoral developments, he mentioned that the nation conducted its general elections in phases between December 2025 and January 2026. These elections notably marked the first implementation of proportional representation and electronic voting, marking a crucial milestone in Myanmar’s democratic progress.
Strengthening Parliamentary Ties
Concluding his remarks, Shri Birla expressed hope that the capacity-building program would enrich the delegation’s understanding of parliamentary practices and democratic institutions. He underscored the importance of such visits in fostering meaningful exchanges and deepening parliamentary cooperation between India and Myanmar.
