India Launches Urgent Safety Measures for Seafarers in Crisis Zone

In response to a recent maritime security crisis in West Asia, following attacks on two merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has initiated a robust ‘Seafarer-First’ plan. This unprecedented approach aims to ensure the safety and security of every Indian seafarer operating in the affected areas.

During a high-level inter-ministerial meeting, Sonowal directed officials to implement real-time monitoring of vessels and to assign dedicated liaison officers to support every Indian seafarer impacted by the situation. This initiative involves close collaboration between multiple government bodies, including the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Navy, and Indian missions in Iran and Oman.

Immediate Actions Following Vessel Attacks

The review meeting came in the wake of the attacks on MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which resulted in the loss of one Indian seafarer’s life and injuries to others. A total of 30 Indian seafarers were on board these ships, raising significant concerns over their safety.

Expressing deep sorrow for the affected seafarers, Sonowal condemned the attacks on civilian vessels, describing them as irresponsible. “These attacks threaten our brave seafarers who play a vital role in global supply chains. We are committed to supporting their families during this difficult time,” he stated, offering condolences and assuring that the government would assist in all possible ways.

New Monitoring System and Support Framework

As part of the government’s enhanced response, Sonowal directed the establishment of a comprehensive vessel monitoring dashboard. This system will track key details about every Indian seafarer and vessel in the region, ensuring no individual is overlooked. The dashboard will offer real-time insights into vessel positions, ownership, crew welfare, and ongoing threats.

Moreover, each affected seafarer will have dedicated liaison officers who will be the main point of contact for families. These officers will coordinate support in various areas, including medical updates, repatriation procedures, and financial assistance.

Collaboration with Global Authorities

In a bid to enhance safety, Sonowal instructed officials to work closely with international maritime organizations and relevant nations to gather accurate navigational safety information. All movements of vessels in the affected waters will require fresh threat assessments and the ship master’s professional judgment.

Shipowners and recruitment agencies must also confirm that Indian seafarers are not pressured to sail without adequate safety measures in place. To facilitate communication and support, a 24/7 grievance helpline has been established, enabling families to voice their concerns.

Sonowal reaffirmed the government’s dedication to a seafarer-centric response, committing to comprehensive efforts across ministries. The priority remains the protection of Indian lives and the maintenance of international maritime laws to ensure unimpeded global trade operations.
