India Accelerates Electric Mobility with PM E-DRIVE Scheme

India is witnessing a remarkable shift towards electric mobility, fueled by strategic policies and financial incentives. At the heart of this transformation is the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement Scheme, commonly known as the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, which was officially launched in September 2024. This initiative aims to foster the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), enhance charging infrastructure, and bolster the domestic EV manufacturing sector.

With an impressive budget of ₹11,900 crore, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme has been extended until March 31, 2028. The program targets multiple categories of electric vehicles and infrastructure, promising substantial benefits for consumers, cities, and the automotive industry alike. As of June 2026, the scheme has already registered sales of over 26.59 lakh EVs, out of the targeted 28.30 lakh, demonstrating its rapid impact.

Overview of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme operates throughout India and was initially set for a two-year period before its extension. The scheme provides dynamic demand incentives and infrastructure support across various vehicle types, including:

  • Electric Two-Wheelers (e-2Ws) and Three-Wheelers (e-3Ws)
  • Electric Buses and Trucks
  • Charging Stations and Testing Facilities

For registered e-2Ws, the scheme offers an incentive of ₹2,500 per kilowatt-hour, up to a maximum of ₹5,000 per vehicle, fostering the growth of this segment substantially. The budget allocation for e-2Ws alone is ₹2,767 crore, aimed at supporting over 45.79 lakh registrations.

Significant Outcomes

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme has achieved significant milestones, including the backing of approximately 26.59 lakh electric vehicles sold as of mid-2026. The initiative has also facilitated the deployment of around 14,028 e-buses throughout the country, with placements already made in major urban centers like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Additionally, the scheme emphasizes infrastructure by allocating ₹2,000 crore for nationwide public charging stations. As of late September 2026, substantial progress is noted, with plans in place for 8,147 chargers across multiple states.

Benefits of the Scheme

For consumers, the scheme’s incentives lower the purchase price of eligible vehicles significantly, making electric mobility more accessible. E-vouchers enable buyers to receive these incentives upfront, enhancing affordability.

Cities benefit from a shift towards cleaner public transportation through the introduction of electric buses and vehicles. The scheme embodies government efforts to cultivate a sustainable mobility ecosystem while addressing environmental challenges.

Lastly, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme bolsters the domestic manufacturing landscape by encouraging localization of EV models. Through an investment of ₹780 crore, it also upgrades vehicle testing agencies to keep pace with new technologies.
