FWICE Calls for Ghooskhor Pandat Title Withdrawal, Threatens Action

The controversy surrounding the upcoming Netflix film “Ghooskhor Pandat,” produced by Neeraj Pandey and featuring Manoj Bajpayee, has escalated significantly. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has formally objected to the film’s title, urging the producers to withdraw it. FWICE has warned of serious repercussions within the industry if their demand is not met, citing concerns that the title could be offensive to a specific community.

Concerns Over the Film’s Title

The controversy ignited soon after the film’s announcement and teaser release, with many viewers and organizations criticizing the title “Ghooskhor Pandat.” Critics argue that the title is derogatory, as it combines “ghooskhor,” a Hindi term for someone who takes bribes, with “Pandat,” a term associated with the Brahmin community. This combination has raised alarms that it could perpetuate negative stereotypes and hurt sentiments among the community members. The backlash has prompted FWICE to take a stand, emphasizing the need for sensitivity in the film industry regarding titles that may provoke misunderstandings or disturb social harmony.

FWICE’s Formal Objection and Warning

FWICE, which represents a wide array of workers, technicians, and artists across various associations, has sent a letter to major OTT platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and others. In this letter, FWICE expressed strong objections to the film’s title, stating that it appears to target a specific community in a derogatory manner. The organization urged all producer bodies to refrain from allowing titles that could incite unrest among the public. They warned that failure to withdraw the title could lead to a boycott of technicians and crew members associated with the film’s production house, potentially affecting future projects.

Legal and Political Reactions

The controversy surrounding “Ghooskhor Pandat” has also attracted legal and political attention. In Lucknow, an FIR has been filed against the film’s creators for allegedly hurting caste sentiments. Additionally, a writ petition has been submitted to the Delhi High Court, seeking a stay on the film’s release on the grounds that the title is “communally offensive.” Political organizations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), have condemned the title and called for appropriate action against the film. In response to the growing backlash, authorities have reportedly instructed Netflix India to remove the teaser and related promotional content from its official channels.

Industry Response and Clarifications

In light of the uproar, Neeraj Pandey issued a statement acknowledging that the title had upset some viewers. He announced that all promotional materials for the film would be temporarily taken down. Pandey clarified that “Ghooskhor Pandat” is a fictional cop drama and that the term “Pandat” is used merely as a colloquial name for a character, not intended to represent any caste or community. Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the controversy, emphasizing that the film’s narrative focuses on a flawed individual’s journey rather than making a statement about any particular community. Additionally, the Film Makers Combine (FMC) has raised procedural objections, noting that the title had not been formally approved under standard registration processes, further complicating the film’s situation.
