DRDO Takes Center Stage at Emerging Science Conclave 2026
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) showcased its innovations at the Emerging Science, Technology, and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from October 27 to 29. The inaugural event, themed ‘Creative Minds, Catalysing Science, Empowering Society’, was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and co-hosted by 12 government ministries under the guidance of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. The conclave illuminated the latest advances in research, deep-tech innovations, and featured discussions with Nobel Laureates, global experts, policymakers, and thriving young leaders, heralding a new wave of scientific excellence.
Focus on Semiconductors and Technological Innovation
DRDO played a pivotal role as one of the key organizers of the event, leading a dedicated session on ‘Semiconductors & Next-Generation Chips’. Chaired by Dr. BK Das, a distinguished scientist and Director General of Electronics and Communication Systems (ECS), this thematic session attracted renowned professionals from industry, academia, and the indigenous chip development sector.
The session included an engaging panel discussion moderated by Dr. Das, featuring insights from Dr. Sheena Rani, another prominent scientist. The panel delved into progressive developments in semiconductor technologies, including purpose-built Artificial Intelligence (AI) System-on-Chips (SoCs), intelligence at the silicon edge, and the dynamic landscape of microprocessors. It underlined DRDO’s expanding role in empowering industries and startups to devise groundbreaking solutions and enhance core technology capabilities required for next-gen chip design.
Showcasing Indigenous Technologies
The DRDO Outreach Stall at ESTIC 2026 highlighted various initiatives, achievements, and research conducted by the Ministry of Defence in enhancing science, technology, and innovation. The stall featured a diverse array of indigenous technologies developed by DRDO, including advanced communication systems, quantum technology prototypes, and innovative protective gear, among others.
Moreover, DRDO participated in both thematic and departmental exhibitions, displaying significant advancements in semiconductor technology such as Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) and Infrared Focal Plane Arrays (IRFPAs) from the Solid State Physics Laboratory in Delhi. The exhibition showcased Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based MMICs, which are integral to several strategic missions and advanced radar systems.
India’s Ambition for Technological Self-Reliance
As semiconductor technology remains a cornerstone for national strength, economic growth, and digital security, its prominence in India’s vision for a robust technological landscape by 2047 is clear. The initiative aims to foster self-reliance in semiconductor production, design, fabrication, and testing to ensure resilient supply chains.
India is on a path to becoming a self-reliant powerhouse in semiconductor technologies, promoting a thriving ecosystem that creates high-value jobs and drives inclusive societal advancements. Strategic defense laboratories and semiconductor foundries in India, such as the Gallium Arsenide Enabling Technology Centre and Semiconductor Technology and Applied Research Centre, are already paving the way for significant progress in this vital industry.
