Chandrasekaran Navigates Final Phase Amid Changing Dynamics and Increased Scrutiny

MUMBAI: N Chandrasekaran’s tenure as chairman of Tata Sons faces uncertainty just days before the company’s annual general meeting on August 18. His position is precarious as he lacks a powerful patron, with significant investments in Air India and Tata Digital struggling financially. Additionally, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has seen a nearly $100 billion decline in market value amid the disruptions caused by the rise of AI technologies like ChatGPT.

Chandrasekaran’s career began in 1987 when he was hired by Faquir Chand Kohli, the founder of TCS. He rose through the ranks under the mentorship of Kohli and his successor, S Ramadorai, eventually becoming CEO in 2009. His appointment as the first non-Parsi head of Tata Sons was unexpected, especially after Ratan Tata chose Cyrus Mistry as chairman in 2012, a decision that led to a tumultuous fallout and Mistry’s eventual ouster.

Chandrasekaran’s leadership has seen notable successes despite recent challenges. Under his guidance, Tata Group’s revenue increased 2.4 times to ₹16.2 lakh crore since FY17, while profits surged sixfold to ₹1.7 lakh crore. The group’s market capitalization more than tripled to ₹27 lakh crore, and Tata Sons’ profit after tax rose 39 times to ₹32,000 crore. New ventures in electronics and India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant were established, and Tata Steel expanded its capacity significantly. However, the recent loss of Ratan Tata in October 2024 shifted the power dynamics within the group, leading to increased scrutiny of Chandrasekaran’s strategies and decisions.
