TRAI Seeks Feedback on Draft AI Guidelines for Telecom Sector

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a significant step towards shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in the telecommunications sector by releasing draft guidelines for public consultation. These guidelines aim to ensure the responsible use of AI within telecommunication networks and services, ensuring that the transformative potential of AI is harnessed effectively while also addressing associated risks.
In February 2026, the Indian government introduced the ‘India AI Governance Guidelines’ to maximize AI’s benefits for inclusive growth and global competitiveness. These guidelines, founded on seven core principles, promote a responsible and balanced approach to AI implementation. The principles are: Trust is the Foundation, People First, Innovation over Restraint, Fairness & Equity, Accountability, Understandable by Design, and Safety, Resilience & Sustainability. Aiming to enhance clarity and accountability in the telecommunications sector, Part 4 of these guidelines provides actionable steps for industry players and regulators.
Significance of Telecommunications in India
The telecommunications sector plays a crucial role in India’s digital landscape, facilitating connectivity for the public, enabling access to essential e-services, and supporting trade and commerce. Moreover, it is pivotal for national security and emergency response, underscoring its significance beyond just social and economic dimensions.
With AI technologies increasingly being integrated into telecommunication systems, TRAI recognizes the need for a framework that fosters responsible AI usage. The authority’s new draft guidelines aim to align with the broader India AI Governance Guidelines, making the implementation of these technologies in the sector more consistent and accountable.
