Indian Navy Launches First Fleet Support Ship Amid Infrastructure Upgrades
In a significant advancement for India’s naval capabilities, the first of the Fleet Support Ships, known as FSS-1, was launched on October 6, 2026, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam. The launch ceremony was graced by Smt. Laila Swaminathan, President of the Navy Welfare & Wellness Association (NWWA), who performed the ceremonial launch in the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
The event was a dual celebration, also marking the keel laying for FSS-5, the fifth ship of its class. Additionally, the inauguration of an Augmented Slipway, an essential infrastructure enhancement at HSL, took place under the observance of Shri Rajnath Singh. High-ranking officials, including Adm. Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, and other dignitaries from the Indian Navy and the Ministry of Defence were present to witness the occasion.
Indigenous Design and Construction
FSS-1 and its sister ships are designed and constructed indigenously at HSL, boasting over 82 percent indigenous content. This achievement highlights the successful collaboration among the Indian Navy, the shipyard, and numerous MSMEs within the defense sector. The introduction of these ships into service will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s ‘Blue Water’ capabilities by enabling the replenishment of Navy vessels while at sea.
Enhancing Operational Logistics
These Fleet Support Ships will play a crucial role in bolstering operational logistics, thereby extending the Fleet’s strategic reach and mobility. In addition to their primary functions, the ships are also equipped to undertake Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, as well as Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO). This versatility allows for quick delivery of relief materials and the safe evacuation of personnel in times of crisis.
Boosting the Indian Shipbuilding Industry
This prestigious project showcases the growth of the Indian shipbuilding industry and stands as a proud emblem of the Government of India’s initiatives, ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India.’ The launch of FSS-1 and the supporting infrastructure developments signify a major step forward in India’s defense capabilities and self-reliance in military manufacturing.
