Sebi Chief Warns Against Herd Mentality in Investing at Project Jagrook Launch, Highlights Investor Fraud Concerns
Rising investment frauds pose a significant challenge for the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), according to chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey. Speaking at the launch of Project Jagruk in Chandigarh, he highlighted that many frauds target first-time retail investors, often misleading them into believing they are investing in legitimate securities. Instead, their money is frequently funneled through mule accounts, leaving victims unaware until it is too late.
Investor Awareness Campaign Launched
Pandey emphasized the need for investors to verify the legitimacy of entities before engaging with them. He noted that Sebi has developed tools to assist with this verification, including a facility available on the Google Play Store and the Sebi Check app. He urged investors to understand financial products and their associated risks, advising against making investment decisions based solely on external recommendations or trends.
India’s capital markets have expanded significantly over the past decade, providing more opportunities for companies and households alike. However, this growth has also led to challenges in ensuring that new investors comprehend the products they are considering. A Sebi survey revealed that while 63% of households are aware of at least one securities market product, only about 9.5% actively participate in the market. The survey also indicated a disparity in market participation between urban and rural areas.
Project Jagruk’s Objectives and Outreach
Project Jagruk aims to address these challenges by providing tailored educational resources to diverse investor demographics. The campaign will be available in English, Hindi, and 11 regional languages, utilizing various media platforms, including television, print, radio, and digital channels.
In addition to the campaign, Sebi has launched a WhatsApp channel for investor communication, which will evolve into a more interactive platform over time. The initiative involves collaboration with market infrastructure institutions, the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), and the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM). The first phase of the media campaign commenced on Monday, with plans for ongoing communication until March 2027.
To enhance financial literacy in rural areas, Sebi is partnering with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to extend its outreach efforts. The initiative will also target universities and colleges, introducing a National Securities Market Awareness curriculum and a free SEBI Investor Awareness test through NISM.
