Anup Bagchi’s First Move: Organizing HDFC’s Operations
MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Anup Bagchi has been appointed as the new managing director and CEO of HDFC Bank. His appointment follows Sashidhar Jagdishan’s decision not to seek a fresh term. The announcement comes after discussions between Bagchi and HDFC Bank chairman Rajiv Kumar, along with nomination and remuneration committee chair Harsh Bhanwala, who had conducted reference checks prior to extending the offer.
Bagchi’s selection was confirmed after a series of discussions and a video call with the HDFC Bank board. His name, along with that of deputy MD Kaizad Bahrucha, was submitted to the Reserve Bank of India on August 12. Bagchi’s strong track record, which includes no regulatory penalties during his tenure at ICICI Life Insurance, contributed to his successful candidacy. He has previously served on panels for the RBI and Sebi and has experience managing crises in the financial sector.
Taking Fresh Guard
Bagchi’s immediate focus will be on recapitalizing HDFC Bank and strengthening its leadership structure. With several senior executives nearing retirement, he aims to dismantle existing silos and foster a culture that prioritizes the institution over individual ambitions. Additionally, he will work on optimizing the bank’s balance sheet by reducing high-cost liabilities and addressing the credit-deposit ratio, which has remained high since the merger three years ago.
Technology and customer service will also be key areas of focus for Bagchi. He faces the challenge of aligning HDFC Bank’s aggressive insurance sales culture with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s stricter distribution rules, while ensuring that protection remains accessible to less-informed customers.
