Government Launches Tree Plantation Drive on Gandhi Jayanti

In a spirited tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, the Department of Legal Affairs under the Ministry of Law and Justice initiated a Tree Plantation Drive at the India International Arbitration Centre (IIAC) in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, on October 1, 2026. This event, themed “Ek ped Maa ke naam,” reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to cleanliness and environmental responsibility.

The initiative was spearheaded by Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, who was joined by Dr. Rajiv Mani, Secretary of the Legislative Department, and key officials from the IIAC. Together, they planted saplings in the IIAC campus, emphasizing the importance of uniting environmental efforts with the principles of cleanliness envisioned by Gandhi.

Shri Meghwal addressed the audience, invoking Gandhi’s philosophy, stating, “True cleanliness begins in the mind (Mann ki Swachhta).” He explained that cleanliness transcends physical spaces, urging all citizens to cultivate pure thoughts and a sense of civic duty. Echoing Gandhi’s vision of a self-reliant India, he noted that October 2 serves as a reminder of the values of discipline and service that underpin Swachhata Hi Seva, a national movement aimed at fostering cleanliness across the country.

The Hon’ble Minister drew attention to Gandhi’s seminal efforts in Champaran in 1917, where he focused on sanitation and hygiene, igniting a broader movement for social change. He conveyed that the lessons learned from Champaran still resonate today, emphasizing that the mission for cleanliness is one of empathy and collective responsibility—not merely a fleeting campaign.

Furthering the conversation on institutional responsibility, Dr. Rajiv Mani highlighted the dual dimensions of cleanliness: one’s immediate environment and the inner self. He stressed that sustainable practices are vital within institutions and pledged IIAC’s commitment to contributing significantly to the Swachh Bharat Mission, with an aim to position India as a preferred destination for international arbitration.

Shri Navin Kumar Singh, CEO of IIAC, expressed gratitude towards all participants and reiterated IIAC’s dedication to environmental sustainability. The event culminated in a collective pledge from those present to maintain cleanliness initiatives and foster a greener future.
