Stacey Nelkin: From Horror Films to Substance Abuse Counseling

Stacey Nelkin (born 1958) is an American film and television actress. She is best known for her role as Ellie Grimbridge in the 1982 horror film Halloween III: Season of the Witch and for her television work on the soap opera Generations.

Early Life and Education

Nelkin was raised in New York City in a Jewish family. She attended Stuyvesant High School.

Career and Achievements

Nelkin’s acting career began in the late 1970s. She starred as Bonnie Sue Chisholm in four episodes of the CBS western miniseries The Chisholms in 1979. When the miniseries resumed in 1980, she turned down the opportunity to reprise her role in order to take a part as Candy on Up the Academy, allowing Delta Burke to take over the role of Bonnie Sue.

In 1982, Nelkin appeared in Halloween III: Season of the Witch as Ellie Grimbridge. Around the same time, she was cast in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner as Mary, a sixth Nexus-6 replicant. Budget constraints led to her part being cut early in principal photography. Before that casting, she had completed a screen test for the role of Pris, which ultimately went to Daryl Hannah. Her screen test from Blade Runner appears on Disc 4 of the collector’s edition DVD set.

Throughout her career, Nelkin made guest appearances on numerous television series including The Paper Chase, The Waltons, CHiPs, The A-Team, Eight Is Enough, 1st & Ten, and Hunter. Her best-known television role came in 1990 when she played Christy Russell on the soap opera Generations. In 2022, she starred in the horror film The Shed after responding to a local casting posting.

Beyond acting, Nelkin developed a second career as a self-styled relationship expert. She maintains a YouTube channel and website, and authored a book titled You Can’t Afford to Break Up: How an Empty Wallet and a Dirty Mind Can Save Your Relationship. She was a frequent guest on Fox & Friends for a period of time.

In 2008, Nelkin began training in drama therapy and transitioned into substance abuse counseling. She became a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Since February 2016, she has worked treating dually diagnosed individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues through the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Program (OASAS) at The Bridge, a New York-based agency serving 4,000 residents annually.

Notable Events and Milestones

Nelkin’s personal life intersected with filmmaker Woody Allen in significant ways. Allen met Nelkin when she was 16 on the set of his 1977 film Annie Hall, where she had a bit part that was later cut. Their relationship began when Allen was 42 and Nelkin was 17, the age of consent in New York at that time. Allen’s 1979 film Manhattan was inspired by his relationship with Nelkin. The two remained longtime friends, and Allen later cast her as Rita in Bullets Over Broadway (1994).

Nelkin married actor Barry Bostwick in 1987; the marriage lasted until 1991. She married Marco Greenberg in 1998 and has three children with him. She has been married three times in total.
