Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi Reunite for Ghatak Sequel After Batwara 1947
After the release of Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi are set to join forces once again. Bollywood Hungama has exclusively learned that the actor-director duo is reuniting for a high-octane action film, which is expected to begin production next year. This collaboration marks their fifth project together, following their successful films Ghayal, Damini, Ghatak, and the recently launched Batwara 1947.
Potential Sequel to Ghatak
While specific details about the upcoming film remain under wraps, sources suggest that it could be a sequel to the 1996 vigilante action film Ghatak. This film is considered one of Deol and Santoshi’s most celebrated collaborations. The title of the new project, whether it will be called Ghatak 2 or something else, will depend on logistical considerations. However, the makers are developing it as a sequel to Ghatak. An official announcement is anticipated within the next three months, with plans to commence production by mid-next year, contingent on Deol’s availability.
A source close to the project shared, “Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi have shared a close friendship since Ghayal came out in 1990. Batwara 1947 not only brought them together professionally after nearly three decades but also rekindled their personal bond. They had a great rapport while working on the film and have already discussed another project. In fact, the first narration has already been done, and Santoshi will soon resume work on the final draft.”
Sunny Deol’s Upcoming Projects
Sunny Deol has an exciting lineup of films ahead. He is set to portray Lord Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated Ramayana, which is scheduled for release during Diwali 2026. Recently, he completed shooting for Antony, an action thriller produced by Excel Entertainment, co-starring Jyotika and Vijay Varma. Following this, Deol will return to the sets of Ramayana to work on the second chapter of the epic. Additionally, he is reportedly in discussions with Mythri Movie Makers for Jaat 2, although that project is still in the writing stage.
Reception of Batwara 1947
Batwara 1947 has garnered appreciation from audiences for its portrayal of humanity above religious identity, set against the backdrop of Partition, a significant and traumatic chapter in India’s history. Although the film has not performed well at the box office, it has been recognized as a fresh voice during a time when films addressing communal divisions have become increasingly prominent.
Rajkumar Santoshi has also addressed audience reactions, questioning the hesitation over Deol’s portrayal of a Muslim character in Batwara 1947. He asked, “If Spiderman’s name was Aslam Sheikh, would they reject him?”
