US Imposes Toughest Sanctions on Iran, Urges China to Assist in Reopening Hormuz
The United States is set to implement what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has termed the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran. This initiative aims to increase economic pressure on Tehran and push for a settlement. Bessent emphasized that the sanctions are part of a broader strategy of economic isolation and called on China, Iran’s largest oil buyer, to assist in reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Bessent promises ‘one-two punch’ against Iran
In an interview with CNBC, Bessent detailed that the U.S. will combine existing blockades with extensive new sanctions. He described this approach as a “one-two punch,” asserting that it would significantly impact Iran’s economy. “It is going to work in Iran and we are going to collapse this regime,” he stated. Bessent plans to hold a press conference on Monday to elaborate on these measures, indicating that the focus will be on maximum economic pressure rather than a large-scale military response.
President Donald Trump recently announced what he called the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY.” He warned nations providing support to Tehran of “tremendous economic consequences.” The campaign will target Iran’s economic lifelines, including oil-smuggling networks and financial transfers.
US puts pressure on China over Iranian oil
China remains a significant challenge for Washington, as it accounts for over 80% of Iran’s seaborne oil exports. Bessent urged Beijing to support U.S. efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy shipping route. He noted that China relies on 50% of its energy from the Gulf, suggesting that cooperation would benefit both nations. However, a Chinese embassy spokesperson rejected the U.S. approach, stating that sanctions and pressure would not resolve the conflict.
Trump warns countries helping Tehran
Trump’s recent measures expand the economic pressure campaign to foreign governments and companies that support Iran. He emphasized the need to halt oil smuggling and other financial activities that sustain Tehran. Trump described the campaign as an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” and called on U.S. allies to join in isolating Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the U.S. strategy, claiming it diverts attention from domestic issues in the U.S.
Hormuz remains key to the confrontation
The sanctions come amid ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil supplies. Trump has insisted on keeping the waterway open, asserting that the U.S. naval blockade has been effective. Iran, however, has linked the reopening of the strait to demands for lifting the blockade and easing sanctions. This confrontation has contributed to fluctuations in global oil markets, with prices rising to three-week highs recently. Bessent believes that the markets are misinterpreting the implications of the economic pressure being applied.
