BRICS Focus Group Advances Digital Public Infrastructure in Pune Meeting

The Focus Group on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and the Digital BRICS Task Force convened in Pune today, continuing the BRICS ICT Track’s in-person meetings. This gathering occurred on the second day of discussions alongside the 7th Meeting of the BRICS Working Group for Cooperation in ICTs.

During the session, the Focus Group received an update from its Chair and heard presentations from India and other member nations regarding their national strategies for digital public infrastructure. Digital public infrastructure is recognized as a vital element for fostering affordable, inclusive, reliable, secure, and citizen-centric digital services. The discussions emphasized core principles such as openness, interoperability, digital sovereignty, and national ownership, while also adhering to domestic laws, regulations, cybersecurity standards, resilience, privacy, and trust.

India took a leading role in these discussions, showcasing its own digital public infrastructure initiatives to the BRICS countries. Moreover, Indian representatives presented a concept note for the BRICS Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Repository and outlined pilot projects for DPI Solutions across the member states.

The Working Group also reviewed several reports highlighting activities conducted throughout the year. These included webinars focused on enhancing secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital telecom infrastructure, collaborative efforts on BRICS submarine cable networks, and overall cooperation within the BRICS digital ecosystem.

In addition to these reports, the Digital BRICS Task Force assessed its past activities and offered an overview of the upcoming Digital BRICS Forum in 2026. The group discussed the draft Terms of Reference for establishing a Digital Applications Expert Group and a Digital Governance Expert Group.

The proceedings of the Working Group are expected to conclude tomorrow, setting the stage for the Digital BRICS Forum and Expo on August 20, followed by the 12th BRICS Communications Ministers’ Meeting on August 21.
