Regional Rural Banks Boost Rural Economy with Strong Lending Growth

RRBs Enhanced Support for Financial Inclusion in FY 2025–26

In the fiscal year 2025–26, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) have played a pivotal role in fostering rural economic development and enhancing financial inclusion. By expanding their credit delivery systems, RRBs have increased their gross loans outstanding by an impressive 10.3%, reaching ₹5,78,349 crore compared to ₹5,24,163 crore in FY 2024–25. The focus on Priority Sector Lending (PSL) under the Reserve Bank of India’s framework remained strong, with RRBs achieving an average of 91.7% against the targeted 75% of Adjusted Net Bank Credit (ANBC).

Nearly all RRBs met their PSL targets during the year, showcasing their commitment to supporting priority sectors that are crucial for building financial inclusivity in rural areas.

Key Areas of Focus: Agriculture and MSME

Agriculture and related sectors dominated the credit portfolio of RRBs, with outstanding loans amounting to ₹3.78 lakh crore, making up 77% of the total PSL. Remarkably, farm credit constituted nearly 98% of all agricultural lending, endorsing RRBs’ dedication to promoting crop cultivation, various agricultural activities, and investments within the rural economy.

Moreover, lending to the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector reached ₹66,978 crore, which accounts for 13.6% of the total PSL. This highlights the crucial role RRBs play in facilitating rural entrepreneurship and driving job creation. Most of the MSME loans targeted micro enterprises, emphasizing support for first-time entrepreneurs, artisans, and small business operations in rural and semi-urban regions. Notably, the services sector received the largest share of MSME funding, followed by manufacturing and Khadi & Village Industries.

Commitment to the Weaker Sections

RRBs have also shown a strong commitment to financial inclusion by providing ₹3.49 lakh crore in credit to weaker sections of society. This effort underscores their goal of ensuring equitable access to institutional credit. Additionally, lending for housing, education, renewable energy, and social infrastructure further supports inclusive and sustainable development—enhancing human capital formation, creating household assets, promoting clean energy, and building local infrastructure.

The financial performance of RRBs for FY 2025–26 reflects a sustained growth trajectory in rural credit, aligning closely with national development objectives. Their ongoing support for farmers, micro-enterprises, and underserved segments positions RRBs as vital contributors to advancing financial inclusion and strengthening rural livelihoods. As such, they remain key players in fulfilling the Government of India’s vision for inclusive and balanced economic growth.
