Rajpal Yadav Faces Three-Month Jail Sentence Over Cheque Bounce Case, Delhi HC Points to Recurring Defaults

The Delhi High Court has sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to three months of simple imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. This decision comes after the court found that Yadav repeatedly failed to honor settlement commitments made in front of the court. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma delivered the verdict in a series of seven cases filed by M/s Murli Projects Private Limited. While Yadav received a three-month sentence for each case, the court ordered that all sentences would run concurrently.

Financial Penalties Imposed

In addition to the jail term, the High Court has mandated that Yadav pay Rs 1.05 crore in each of the seven cases. His wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, has also been directed to pay a fine exceeding ₹5 lakh in each matter. During the proceedings, the court emphasized that Yadav had been given multiple opportunities to resolve the dispute and clear his outstanding dues. Justice Sharma noted, “Opportunities were granted to honour the settlement. He [Yadav] and his counsel made several statements and assurances, and despite these repeated opportunities and assurances, he failed to honour the undertakings.”

The judge has granted Yadav two months to appeal the order in a higher court, allowing him a chance to contest the ruling.

Background of the Legal Dispute

The legal troubles for Yadav date back to a conviction in May 2024, when a sessions court sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment for a cheque bounce case. The Delhi High Court later suspended that sentence after Yadav’s legal team assured the court that the matter would be resolved amicably. The dispute was subsequently referred to the Delhi High Court Mediation Centre in hopes of reaching a settlement.

Despite several adjournments and repeated assurances from Yadav, the settlement did not materialize. The High Court observed that he failed to deposit various amounts he had promised to pay, including Rs 2.5 crore, for which he sought permission to make payments in installments.

Previous Court Directives and Surrender

In February 2026, the High Court ordered Yadav to surrender to jail authorities after he failed to comply with earlier directives. His request for additional time to surrender was denied. Yadav eventually surrendered on February 5 and remained in custody until he was granted interim suspension of his sentence after depositing Rs 1.5 crore with the complainant.
