Gul Panag Supports Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Satluj’ Amid Controversy: “Banning It Is Always Counterproductive”

The controversy surrounding the Diljit Dosanjh starrer Satluj is intensifying after the film was reportedly dropped last weekend, only to be reinstated within 48 hours. This swift back-and-forth has sparked widespread reactions online. Amidst the ongoing discussions about the film’s release, actress Gul Panag has stepped forward to express her support for the project, emphasizing the significance of artistic freedom and the need to confront challenging historical narratives.
Gul Panag’s Personal Reflections
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gul Panag, who has her roots in Punjab, shared her personal experiences growing up during one of the state’s most tumultuous periods. She reflected on the harsh realities of that time, stating, “I grew up in Punjab during the brutal years of militancy. I remember reading newspaper headlines about buses being stopped and innocent passengers being pulled out and killed. I also remember accounts of young men being picked up, detained and tortured, despite having nothing to do with the movement. Including from my village. Those memories are precisely why I don’t believe we should become so uncomfortable with difficult chapters of our history that we stop telling stories about them.”
Gul’s tweets highlight her belief that stories rooted in history should not be silenced. She argues that films exploring such subjects deserve to be seen rather than banned, reinforcing the idea that confronting uncomfortable truths is essential for understanding the past.
The Role of Cinema in Historical Discourse
In another tweet, Gul emphasized that cinema should foster discussion and criticism rather than censorship. She stated, “A film isn’t a history textbook. It tells a story through one lens and one perspective. Debate it. Critique it. Counter it. Banning it is always counterproductive. But don’t assume Punjab’s hard-won rejection of separatism is so fragile that a film can reverse it!!”
Her comments come at a critical time as Satluj remains at the center of a growing public debate. The film is based on the life and work of Jaswant Singh Kalra, a human rights activist known for investigating the alleged secret killings and cremation of several people in Punjab during the 1990s. Originally titled Punjab ’95, the project has faced numerous hurdles over its release.
Challenges Faced by Satluj
Satluj has reportedly encountered multiple issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to its sensitive and controversial subject matter, leading to prolonged delays. Despite the anticipation surrounding the project, it has yet to secure a release on any platform.
Directed against the backdrop of one of Punjab’s most complex historical periods, Satluj features Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, alongside Arjun Rampal, Surinder Vicky, and others in pivotal roles. With fresh voices from the film fraternity now weighing in, the conversation surrounding Satluj, artistic freedom, and the portrayal of history on screen continues to gain momentum.
