Jaaved Jaaferi’s Family Cheating Case: Crime Branch Targets BMC Official with Lookout Notice

The Mumbai Crime Branch has issued a lookout notice for Mahesh Patil, a suspended assistant municipal commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This action is part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged cheating case involving actor Jaaved Jaaferi’s family, with claims amounting to Rs 16.24 crores. The notice was reportedly issued earlier this month due to concerns that Patil might attempt to flee the country while the investigation is still active. This development follows the arrest of UK-based businessman Nishit Patel, who is also implicated in the case.
Allegations of Fraud in Redevelopment Project
The case centers around alleged investments made by Jaaved Jaaferi, his wife Habiba Jaffrey, and their relatives in a proposed redevelopment project located in Bandra West. Investigators assert that the investors were promised lucrative returns and commercial spaces in the project. However, they were reportedly deceived through forged documents and false assurances.
According to police officials, Habiba Jaffrey first met Mahesh Patil in April 2024 during a visit to his BMC office regarding a tax-related issue. During this meeting, Patil allegedly informed her about an investment opportunity tied to a Bandra property project and suggested that she route the investment through Nishit Patel. This connection set off a series of events that led to significant financial losses for the Jaaferi family and other investors.
The Role of Nishit Patel
Investigators claim that Nishit Patel made several visits to the Jaffrey family’s home, where he presented layouts, maps, and project-related documents to build their trust. He allegedly convinced them to invest substantial amounts in exchange for commercial space in the redevelopment project. Crime branch officials have stated that Patel used forged letters purportedly issued by a private bank, along with other fabricated documents, to assure investors of the project’s legitimacy.
The property cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch had previously arrested Nishit Patel for his alleged involvement in this case. Authorities believe that nearly Rs 16.24 crores was collected from Jaaved Jaaferi, his family members, and other investors through misleading representations related to the redevelopment project.
Impact on Prominent Individuals
The alleged fraud may have affected several notable individuals, according to investigators. Police sources indicate that retired police officers, civic officials, artists, and retired judges were among those who invested amounts ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 20 crores, all lured by promises of attractive returns.
The scheme reportedly came to light in July 2025 when some complainants visited the Bandra registration office to verify project-related documents. During this process, they discovered that one of the agreements presented to them did not exist in official records.
Jaaved Jaaferi has previously expressed admiration for dance legends, calling Shammi Kapoor, Prabhu Deva, and Hrithik Roshan his dance idols.
