Bharat Taxi Initiative Launched to Boost Driver Opportunities in Mumbai
In an important move to enhance urban mobility and improve the livelihoods of drivers, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, launched the Bharat Taxi driver onboarding initiative in Mumbai on April 23, 2026. The event took place at the Kamla Vihar Sports Club in Kandivali West, attracting hundreds of auto-rickshaw and cab drivers, along with representatives from transport unions and cooperative associations. This initiative aims to provide greater access to structured digital platforms that enhance driver participation, improve transparency, and create better earning opportunities.
During his address, Shri Piyush Goyal highlighted the critical role of cooperative and technology-driven models in India’s evolving mobility ecosystem. He stated that Bharat Taxi allows drivers to act as partners while utilizing digital tools designed to boost transparency and enhance their earnings and dignity. This initiative reflects the future trajectory of urban transport systems in India.
Strengthening Driver Mobility Across Cities
The onboarding drive is part of broader efforts to establish driver-first mobility systems in major urban areas. By streamlining the onboarding process, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring consistent ride demand, the initiative aims to create a sustainable and inclusive environment for both drivers and commuters. Mumbai joins a growing list of cities, including Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Lucknow, where organized mobility networks are steadily expanding.
Recent operational data indicates significant growth for the platform, with over 517,000 drivers engaged, 5 million customers onboarded, and nearly 1 million rides facilitated each month across various cities. On this occasion, Shri Vivek Pandey, COO of Bharat Taxi, expressed optimism about Mumbai’s potential as a market. He noted the strong backing from local driver unions, which has bolstered confidence in the platform’s expansion efforts and its commitment to fostering a robust driver ecosystem in the city.
A Vision for Nationwide Expansion
The initiative aligns with the vision of Shri Amit Shah, the Hon’ble Minister for Home and Cooperation, who aims for Bharat Taxi to operate in all major Indian cities over the next three years. This launch in Mumbai marks a significant milestone in that national growth plan. The program underlines the government’s ongoing focus on developing technology-led, inclusive, and cooperative mobility frameworks that cater to the changing needs of drivers and passengers in metropolitan areas.
