Government Addresses E20 Petrol Controversy: Seven Claims on Ethanol Blended Fuel Impacting Mileage and Engines Debunked
Seeking to address concerns regarding the use of E20 petrol, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has released a statement rejecting seven claims about its impact on vehicles. The ministry aims to clarify misconceptions related to mileage, engine failure, and compatibility with older vehicles. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari noted that while E20 may reduce fuel efficiency by 2-6%, it offers benefits such as improved acceleration and lower carbon emissions.
Clarifications on E20 Petrol
The government asserts that vehicles manufactured before 2023 can safely use E20 petrol. It cites over three and a half years of E15+ usage and more than two years of E19-E20 availability without evidence of widespread engine failures. Data from 2.84 crore vehicles, including 1.5 crore not originally certified for E20, shows no significant issues related to corrosion or component life.
Regarding the claim that 30 crore vehicles would become unusable, the ministry clarified that E15+ has been in use for over three years, with no verified reports of engine failures. More than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars have operated on these fuels without significant breakdowns. The ministry emphasized that if E20 rendered vehicles unusable, there would have been millions of breakdowns and warranty claims.
Industry Support for E20
In a joint press conference, major automobile manufacturers, including Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, expressed their support for E20 fuel. They confirmed that E20 was introduced after rigorous testing and that service data showed no significant damage linked to its use. Maruti Suzuki reported that the impact on fuel efficiency is generally limited to 3-3.5%. Hero MotoCorp also indicated no higher incidence of damage in vehicles using E20.
The ministry highlighted that a leading automobile manufacturer serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY2025-26, with no abnormal wear or corrosion attributed to E20. Another manufacturer tracked 1.4 crore vehicles using E20 and found no evidence of ethanol-induced issues.
Addressing Mileage Concerns
The ministry stated that fuel efficiency is influenced by various factors, including driving behavior and vehicle maintenance. For older vehicles designed for E10, any reduction in fuel economy is typically around 3-5%. E20 fuel is said to provide several performance advantages, such as a higher octane rating and better acceleration.
The government also addressed claims that manufacturers are being forced to support E20. It stated that if manufacturers were dissatisfied with E20’s validation, they would not certify vehicles as E20-compatible or continue to honor warranties. Manufacturers are confident in the extensive testing conducted prior to the fuel’s introduction.
Transparency in the Automotive Sector
In response to allegations of government pressure on automobile companies, the ministry emphasized that these manufacturers are independent entities with legal responsibilities to their customers. Concealing defects would expose them to significant risks, including warranty claims and reputational damage. The continued warranty coverage for E20-compatible vehicles reflects the manufacturers’ confidence in the fuel’s safety and performance.
