Government Launches Initiatives for Senior Citizens’ Welfare
The government is enhancing its dedication to the dignity, security, and well-being of senior citizens through the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY). In celebration of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2025, the Department initiated a range of nationwide programs aimed at promoting healthy ageing, social inclusion, legal awareness, and strengthening inter-generational ties among senior citizens.
This announcement was made by Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri B.L. Verma in a written response in the Lok Sabha to Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal. The widespread celebrations underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to fostering an age-friendly society that encourages senior citizens to engage actively with their communities.
Collaborative Efforts and Agreements
As part of the IDOP celebrations, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established with the Birla Open Minds Foundation to initiate joint efforts aimed at uplifting and empowering older individuals. Additionally, the Department virtually inaugurated five Senior Citizen Homes across Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, thereby enhancing the institutional care and support available to elderly citizens throughout the nation.
Promoting Inter-Generational Engagement
In a bid to foster family values and connections across generations, the Department introduced a new interactive educational game called “Naitik Patham.” This initiative is tailored to encourage meaningful exchanges between younger and older members of society. Furthermore, a QR Code-based program for Grandparents-Teachers Meetings was launched to boost senior citizens’ involvement in their grandchildren’s educational development.
Health and Legal Awareness Initiatives
The nationwide celebrations featured inter-generational bonding activities in various locations such as Jabalpur, Badaun, Chhatarpur, Navgaon, Biaora, and Mount Abu. These programs successfully brought together youth and senior citizens through engaging and interactive activities. Collaborating with S-VYASA in Bengaluru, the Department organized yoga sessions and health camps to promote healthy and active aging.
Recognizing the importance of legal rights, a special session focusing on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 was held in partnership with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the legal protections and welfare provisions available to senior citizens, urging families and communities to acknowledge their responsibilities towards older family members.
Cultural Celebrations and Future Commitments
Highlighting the contributions of senior citizens to society, a cultural program titled “Aradhana” was also part of the celebrations, promoting their active participation in cultural and community events.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, the government has reaffirmed its promise to ensure that every senior citizen lives with dignity, respect, security, and access to quality care. Under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), the Ministry remains committed to collaborating with State Governments, autonomous bodies, and civil society organizations to create an inclusive and supportive environment for senior citizens nationwide.
