ITR Filing Deadline Extended: Will July 31, 2026, Be the Final Date for Income Tax Returns? Explore Recent Updates

July 31, 2026, remains the deadline for salaried taxpayers and pensioners to file their income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2025-26. The Income Tax Department has not announced any extension to this deadline. Taxpayers with business or professional income have different deadlines, with non-audit cases due by August 31, 2026, and audit cases by October 31, 2026.

Under the new tax regime, income up to Rs 4 lakh is exempt from tax, while the old regime sets the exemption threshold at Rs 2.5 lakh. Taxpayers whose income exceeds these limits must file an ITR. Additionally, certain financial transactions can trigger the requirement to file, including electricity expenses over Rs 1 lakh or foreign travel expenditures exceeding Rs 2 lakh.

ITR Deadline: Penalties for Late Filing

Taxpayers can file a belated return within nine months after the end of the tax year, which means the deadline for the 2025-26 tax year is December 31, 2026. A late filing fee of up to Rs 5,000 applies, reduced to Rs 1,000 for those with an income not exceeding Rs 5 lakh. Interest at 1% per month on any unpaid tax will accrue from the original due date until the return is filed.

Late filing has broader implications beyond financial penalties. Taxpayers cannot carry forward losses to future years, except for losses under house property. They also lose the option to switch between the old and new tax regimes after the due date. The Finance Act, 2026, allows for the revision of both original and belated returns within 12 months from the end of the tax year, with the revised return for 2025-26 due by March 31, 2027, subject to applicable fees.
