NCDC Enhances Disease Surveillance Programs Nationwide

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is stepping up its efforts to strengthen the country’s disease surveillance infrastructure. Under various national programs, including those for viral hepatitis, rabies control, and leptospirosis prevention, NCDC is making significant strides in public health. The government is keen on improving the nation’s capacity to respond to infectious diseases, ensuring better health outcomes for all citizens.

Implemented under the Central Sector Umbrella Scheme, the NCDC oversees various initiatives since 2012. Some of these key programs include the National Program for Surveillance of Viral Hepatitis, the National Rabies Control Programme, and the Programme for Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis, among others. Each initiative aims to enhance the nation’s capacity to manage and prevent disease outbreaks effectively.

In addition, NCDC is working on the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), which focuses on bolstering surveillance and outbreak response mechanisms across the country. This includes the establishment of state branches, Regional Branches, and Biosafety Level-3 Laboratories (BSL-3). The initiative aims to improve integrated health information systems and reinforce the existing surveillance framework.

Comprehensive Surveillance Programs

Beyond the umbrella schemes, NCDC administers further programs such as the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming. These national programs are part of the Central Sponsored Schemes under the National Health Mission. For those seeking more information, detailed insights are available on the NCDC’s official website.

To reinforce disease surveillance infrastructure, NCDC employs various strategies. These include the implementation of IDSP across all States and Union Territories, transitioning to the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) in 2021, and establishing District Public Health Laboratories. Additionally, Metropolitan Surveillance Units (MSUs) will be set up based on factors such as population size, disease burden, and existing public health infrastructure.

Government Support and Funding

The government, through the National Health Mission (NHM), facilitates funding to States and Union Territories based on proposals outlined in their Program Implementation Plans (PIPs). This financial backing is crucial for advancing public health efforts throughout the country.

During a recent Lok Sabha session, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted these developments in response to inquiries about the government’s commitment to enhancing disease surveillance. The ongoing efforts aim to create a robust health system capable of responding effectively to emerging health threats.
