L&T Secures Major Contract for New Cable-Stayed Bridge in West Bengal

In a significant development for transportation infrastructure in India, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded a substantial contract to construct a vital Cable-Stayed Bridge over the Muri Ganga River, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This ambitious project aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic development in the region.

Project Overview and Importance

The contract entails the construction of a 3.2 km Extradosed Cable-Stayed Bridge featuring a remarkable maximum span of 177 meters. In addition to the bridge itself, L&T is also responsible for building approach roads extending 0.9 km on the Kakdwip side and 0.65 km on the Sagar Island side. The infrastructure will incorporate advanced technological features such as an Advanced Traffic Management System, a Bridge Health Monitoring System, and innovative architectural lighting, along with all necessary road furnishings.

This Cable-Stayed Bridge is poised to be a game-changer for Sagar Island, which currently relies on ferry transport that can be unreliable, particularly during adverse weather conditions. With the new bridge, over 200,000 residents of the island will benefit from improved access to essential services, including healthcare, enhancing their overall quality of life. The all-weather connectivity is expected to significantly improve mobility and open up new economic opportunities for the island’s inhabitants.

Boosting Pilgrimage and Economic Growth

Beyond enhancing local accessibility, the bridge is crucial for facilitating convenient travel for millions of devotees heading to the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, which ranks as the second-largest religious gathering in India, following the Kumbh Mela. By ensuring safe passage for pilgrims, the bridge will likely see a surge in visitor numbers during the festival, culminating in heightened local economic activity.

Furthermore, the bridge’s construction is anticipated to drive trade and tourism, ultimately transforming the socio-economic landscape of Sagar Island. The project aligns perfectly with L&T’s long-standing commitment to engaging in quality infrastructure development that meets current and future needs.

As a pioneering Indian multinational, L&T has a remarkable history of delivering extensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects while focusing on high-quality outcomes. With this latest venture, L&T exemplifies its dedication to enhancing India’s infrastructure and supporting economic growth across multiple regions.
